I watched a video about the oldest rubber tree in Malaysia located at Kuala Kangsar, Perak where I stumbled upon the comment several weeks before my visit to Akademi Hevea Malaysia. Yes, I found myself agreeing with this perspective as rubber plantations did contribute to the decline in traditional farming. After the visit, I now understand that the notion of diminishing identity is partially valid, however identity is not erased, it evolves. The introduction of rubber brought profound changes, and the rubber industry was a defining force in shaping the socioeconomic fabric of Malaysia, driving our country to become one of the world's largest producers of natural rubber and rubber products. Additionally, this industry also laid the foundation of Malaysia's multiethnic society, catalysing major demographic and cultural shifts.

Understanding the theory of it all is important but gaining this valuable practical experience and exposure was a game changer. Certainly, have found a new sense of appreciation of the dedicated work Malaysian rubber tappers go through extracting latex and the subsequent science and intricate craftmanship that takes place in the processing plants. Imagine producing ‘art’ in a sauna like setting as the master craftsmen forgo fans to ensure their pure focus is on the sound of optimum water flow and heat machines whirring at the right frequency to produce the best possible Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) output. The best in the world? I’d say yes. No One Knows Rubber Like Malaysia Does. This phrase isn’t just a marketing gimmick as I have come to see firsthand. It is a true testament and reflection of the hard work put in intertwined with the 100 over years of knowledge by the elders of the Malaysian rubber industry, and now the newer generation of data driven and technological savvy rubber professionals.

To be able to walk these sacred grounds as our elders have, understanding the life cycle of each rubber tree and how meticulous efforts are being made by Malaysia’s brightest researchers and scientists to ensure a sustainable Cradle to Cradle approach to protect our environment while also optimizing the smallholders returns, to actually holding a tapping knife physically and successfully tapping the rubber tree itself and seeing that valuable liquid ‘gold’ flow out, it was an enriching yet humbling experience.

It gave me a real respect for the tappers who do this every day and reminded me how much craftsmanship goes into even the most basic materials we often take for granted.

This experience really made me reflect on the importance of local resources and industries. Rubber isn’t just a commodity, it’s part of our heritage, our economy, and our innovation landscape. I left the programme inspired, with a deeper understanding and a lot of ideas for how this knowledge can connect to what I do.

Another highlight was our trip to IRPEC Malaysia, where we explored various rubber products and learned about their applications in everyday life. This experience helped me understand the full journey of rubber, from its natural source to finished products, and gave me a deeper appreciation for the knowledge, effort, and innovation involved.

There was something charmingly grounding about stepping into nature’s quiet rhythm, learning the delicate art of tapping the trees, and watching the latex flow. It wasn’t just fun—it was unexpectedly moving. As I held the tapping knife in hand, I couldn’t help but think about my grandparents and great-grandparents, who once stood in this very same position, doing this day in and day out as part of their livelihood. 🌳🤍

The whole experience was a perfect blend of education and enjoyment. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the hard work that goes into something as simple as a rubber band or a pair of shoes. More than anything, it felt like a sweet, gentle bridge to the past—a rare chance to walk in the footsteps of those who came before me, while laughing and learning along the way. 😊🪓🌿
