What it is: This is a project that can be used as an introduction to the unit on the Holocaust/WWII as well as a closing activity. As a class, read and discuss the poem before starting the unit. Students will then receive an ID card from the Holocaust Museum before the unit, and will color a butterfly to be hung on display in remembrance of the Holocaust victim. At the end of the unit, students can use the Holocaust Museum's website to look of their victim they were given at the beginning of the unit and read about what happened to them. Re-read the poem again after completion of the unit to discuss how their thoughts and feelings have changed.
How it relates to content area: This activity interweaves both social studies content with ELA and art activities. Students can use the poem as both a starting and endpoint for the unit, while using their creativity to create butterflies in remembrance of the Holocaust victims. They will use what they learned throughout the unit to reflect personally.

From English Elixir, n.d. and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. n.d.
