Through this, Warren Fellows is able to focus the conditions of which he had no access to basic health services in prison (medicine, doctors, health check-ups), was in a constant state of fear due to the torturous , erratic tendencies of the guards (tricking people, torturing) and he made sure to put emphasis on the lack of human rights (freedom of speech etc.) His emphasis on the horrible conditions of an area in the prison called "The dark room", he was able to deepen the readers sympathy through describing the conditions he was kept in 'stinking room' , 'mass of bodies' and so forth.
Leah Winter

In this excerpt, Warren Fellows is strongly perceived as being a victim as a result from the lack of basic health and safety, and human rights, and his specific use of language features such as emotive language and first person further emphasises this. The use of the emotive language ‘Desperate with fear, I begged’, conveys how scared he really was and realising his human rights aren’t available to him. Fellows’ goes on to repeatably contribute the personal pronoun ‘I’, which is used to enhance the perception on who this was happening too and that he is a victim to this prison.
