EDUC 6548: Concerns with English Learners #1 by Jon McFarland

As a way to establish community and share with the class, provide at least ONE challenge that you are experiencing with your English learners (ELs) now. What do you want to know to better serve your emergent bilinguals? Be prepared to discuss it further in class with the group.

One challenge I'm experiencing with my EL's is many of my EL students do not have updated ELPAC scores, or if they do have them the data has not been synthesized into an updated designation. So I don't know how to best accommodate unless I spend the time for each student to personally explore their assessment records and try to understand their designation. My best guess is 99% of my EL's are designated as level 3, so what I'd like to know is how to support level 3 students while still challenging their growth. Specifically with choosing a script for a performance, how can I better understand where to start them at? Is it all just trial and error? Feels negligent.

I post the class notes every day at the end on the class website, but I would like to have the option for other languages. I think having my note be translated to Spanish would go a long way because all of my EL students are Spanish speakers. The biggest hang up tech wise is that all my notes are handwritten, so I’m not sure if there is a tech option to easily translated them. I also realize now how important it was to pay attention in my Spanish classes instead of hitting the purge button on my brain after the final.

Another note, I need to get better at not getting tongue tied. Perhaps constructing my sentences so I don’t have a bunch of similar sounding words mashed together.
