         <title>Cognitive Development Theory</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Piaget really liked putting children into <strong>boxes</strong>. He was incredibly organized, but lacked in experience and nurture oriented organization of development. </p><p>Piaget described four stages of cognitive development: <strong>sensorimotor</strong>, <strong>preoperational</strong>, <strong>concrete operations</strong>, and <strong>formal operations</strong>.</p><p>The first stage in Piaget’s theory is the <strong>sensorimotor</strong> stage. As the name implies, Piaget believed infants organize their world by means of their senses and their physical action on it. There are three general trends in development within the sensorimotor period: (1) reflexes become goal-directed activity, (2) motor action becomes mental representation, and (3) object permanence develops.</p><p>When children are in the <strong>preoperational</strong> stage, they do not think in a logical way. The child, rather, has the ability to use symbols. This is where children are identified with conservation, egocentrism, intuitive and symbolic thought.</p><p>The third stage in Piaget’s theory is <strong>concrete operations</strong>. Children in the stage of concrete operations can think logically, but the limitation of this period is that thinking is concrete rather than abstract. </p><p>Piaget’s stage of formal operations is marked by the development of abstract thinking. Being able to think abstractly means teenagers no longer take literally a statement such as “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Piaget believed we are constantly learning about and adapting to our environment by organizing the world in ways we can understand. The units we use to organize our understanding are called <strong>schemas</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Piaget believed adaptation consists of two processes: <strong>assimilation</strong> and <strong>accommodation</strong>. In <strong><em>assimilation</em></strong>, we take new information and put it into an existing schema, whether it really fits there or not. </p><p>In <strong><em>accommodation</em></strong>, the child would create a new schema for whatever he/she is learning based on whether is fits in what he/she already knows or not. </p><p>If the child is not able to do either, he is thrown into what Piaget describes as <strong>disequilibrium</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Piaget believed that children change in qualitative ways from one age period to the next.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><em>Pages 41, 27, 210-218</em></strong></p><p><strong><em>(Levine, L.          <title>Overview</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In my classroom, there are likely to be many different students and capability to understand the material. </p><p>For starters, I can assume I may have around 30 to 4o kids in my class, as I am going to be a music teacher who teaches every grade level. I can assume my class size will be rather large, thus increasing the amount of diversity in language, reading comprehension, life experience, etc. </p><p><br></p><p>My students may even speak different languages, or have english as their second or third language. The best part about a music class is the majority of my curriculum will be able to be taught with actions and having the students repeat those actions. Plus, solfege is one of the biggest things we study in music in all levels, and that is a language no one knows, so most students are on a level playing field. </p><p><br></p><p>Some students may be able to read better than others, and if this is the case, I will assign those strong readers with those who aren't as strong, or change my lesson plan to effectively fit everyone. As I previously stated, this is easier as a music teacher. </p><p><br></p><p>In my music class, depending on the grade level, we will be going over music literacy, rhythm, pitch matching, phrasing, instruments, music history, reading, and simple addition as well as high and low differentiation skills.</p><p><br></p><p>In classrooms I have observed previously, there have been aids for students who are not able to fully participate on their own in music class. This has been, in my observance, very beneficial to the teacher and other students, and is something I will strive to employ as well. </p><p>Giving the students jobs is also something I have observed is very successful in engaging the students. Someone can be the spinner, the instrument supplier, the music player, and so on. </p><p><br></p><p>I will be going over the cognitive theories of several theoreticians one by one and describing how each of them operates, and then explain how I may or may not employ them in my own classroom. </p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Piaget's main contention is the operation of organized boxes or steps (hence the hopscotch reference). These steps that children take in development can be highly useful of identifying mental barriers in students, or emotional or physical trauma hindering any kind of cognitive development. It can also identify if the student is able to and ready to learn at the level of their peers based on a set curriculum, such as provided by the public school system. </p><p><br/></p><p>The things about Piaget's theory that I disagree with, or will not use in my classroom, are those boxes he puts children in. Because music is also such a subjective subject, I don't believe it fits as well as it might in other core classes. I also do not believe that students are supposed to be any certain way, and even those who have "mental illness", who's to say they aren't just another variation of our vast and complex brain systems? Everyone's brain is different, and that is my main rebuttal against Piaget and his theory. Not every student will be able to fit into the boxes he presents, and that doesn't mean they are not simply thinking a different way. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Sociocultural Theory of Cognitive Development</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Vygotsky believed that children do not belong in boxes, and need help in order to learn effectively. </p><p>His main contention was the <strong>Zone of Proximal Development</strong> <strong>(ZPD)</strong>. He developed the idea that children should be tested twice: the first time performing on their own and the second time performing with a little help from an adult. This technique assesses children’s actual level of achievement but also their readiness to learn.</p><p><strong>Scaffolding</strong>, another portion of Vygotsky's theory, is a process of providing the support that helps the child learn what is just out of reach of his abilities. When we present learning opportunities that are too hard for a child’s current level, the child cannot benefit from instruction. On the other hand, if we continue to present opportunities the child has already mastered, this also fails to grow the child’s understanding. It is when we get it just right in the middle, in the zone that is just a little beyond the child’s current level, that learning can occur. </p><p><strong>Private speech</strong> is an essential component of the learning process for Vygotsky.          <title>Information Processing Theory Aspects</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Information Processing approach breaks down the way we understand and use information into specific aspects of cognition. It likens the human mind to a computer, focusing on how we encode, store, and retrieve information.</p><p><br/></p><p>Ths inside out image really depicts how this works in my brain. The emotions in movie pick and choose memories to replay so that the person they are controlling can learn and grow and behave according to those experiences. It wouldn't matter what happened to the person if they were not able to retrieve what happened. </p><p><br/></p><p>When we see, hear, or read something, our brain <strong>encodes</strong> that information, turning it into a format we can understand. This information is then stored in our memory—first briefly in <strong>short-term memory</strong> and later in <strong>long-term memory</strong> for later use. When we need to recall that information, our brain <strong>retrieves</strong> it, bringing it back to our awareness. </p><p><br/></p><p>The theory also emphasizes the importance of <strong>attention</strong>. Throughout these steps, attention plays a crucial role, helping us focus on relevant information while filtering out distractions.          <description><![CDATA[<p>I've put a hippie on the graphic because the "go with the flow" attitude reminds me of Vygotsky's overall general idea. </p><p><br/></p><p>Vygotsky's theory emphasizes the importance of social interaction and cultural context in learning, which can be effectively applied in a music classroom setting. To implement this theory, I can create collaborative learning experiences where students work together on their respective musical projects, such as group performances or composition exercises. </p><p>By using <strong>scaffolding</strong>, I can provide support and guidance tailored to each student's current skill level, gradually reducing assistance as my students gain confidence and competence.</p><p><br/></p><p>While Vygotsky's theory offers valuable insights for classroom settings, certain aspects may not be as well suited. For example, his emphasis on <strong>collaborative learning</strong> might not fit all subjects or student dynamics, particularly if group work leads to off-task behavior or unequal participation among students. Some students might even take other, more innately talented students to their own advantage and cheat or get ahead that way. </p><p>To tag off of that, Vygotsky doesn't focus as much on innate ability as he does experience and nurture situations in learning. There is certainly as aspect, however, of innate ability in life between different people. So there is a way his theory does not apply. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Core Knowledge Theory can be super beneficial in a music classroom by providing a structured framework for understanding how students <strong><em>acquire</em></strong> the musical knowledge we are going over in class. By recognizing that students come with <strong>innate knowledge systems</strong>, in contrast to Vygotsky's theory, I can tailor lessons to build on a student's natural inclination and interest in music. </p><p>For example, I might focus on fundamental concepts like rhythm and melody, which are often easier for students to grasp due to their innate cognitive frameworks, and build simple and very movement-based lessons. </p><p><br/></p><p>Incorporating <strong>domain-specific learning</strong>, I can create lessons that focus on key areas, such as music theory, performance skills, or historical context, allowing my students to develop a deeper understanding of each aspect. This approach encourages the introduction of concepts sequentially, ensuring that foundational knowledge is solidified before moving on to more complex ideas.</p><p><br/></p><p>Using <strong>cultural elements</strong> in my curriculum can also enhance engagement, as students may already have some exposure to different musical styles or genres. As a child, I grew up on Jazz, because my father is a jazz pianist. This made it easier to connect my existing knowledge to new concepts in music, and thus, I am a professional musician now. </p><p>By emphasizing early development and recognizing that students can explore and expand their innate musical abilities, based on what they already know, I can foster a supportive environment that encourages experimentation and creativity!</p><p><br/></p><p>However, when applying Core Knowledge Theory in the classroom, several aspects may present challenges. </p><p>One concern is the <strong><em>overemphasis</em> on innate knowledge</strong>, which might lead some educators to underestimate the impact of individual experiences and environmental factors on learning, which aligns more with Vygotsky's theory. </p><p>This could result in a one-size-fits-all approach that doesn’t account for diverse student backgrounds and learning styles.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another issue is the potential for <strong>rigidity in curriculum design</strong>. Music involves collaboration, expression, and creativity, which may not be captured perfectly by a purely information-processing approach. </p><p><br/></p><p>Also, the emphasis on <strong>structured learning</strong> and sequential steps may overlook the need for flexibility in teaching. Students may benefit from exploration and improvisation, which can be stifled if lessons are too rigidly organized around cognitive processes.</p>]]></description>
