-Jonas starts to grapple with the fact that his community has no freedom. The giver reminds him that if they had the right to choose, they might make the wrong decisions.
-Jonas is beginning to see other colours. Jonas is also beginning to get irrationally angry at his friends for being satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance that he was experiencing.
-Jonas tries to spread his newfound awareness to his friends without the giver's permission but it doesn't work. 
-The giver gives Jonas a disturbing memory; he finds himself in the grass lands and watches poachers hunt an elephant. Another elephant comes to bury the corpse. Jonas tells Lily about how there were once live elephants but Lily doesn't believe him
-The giver talks about how the when the previous receiver of memory failed, the memories she received were released and the people outside of the community got access to the memories. Things became chaotic until the memories were finally assimilated.
-Sometimes, the giver sends Jonas away without training as he is in pain. One day Jonas asks the giver to give him the memory causing the pain so the giver has less pain.

-The giver gives Jonas the memory that has been causing him pain. It starts out relatively normal, with a sled and a hill, But Jonas is unable to slow down or steer on the now icy hill. The sled hits a bump in the hill and sends Jonas flying. When he hits the ground, he breaks his leg. He then precives the word fire as pain spreads. When the memory ends his leg is unbroken but it aches.After the memory, he asks if he can have an "relief-of-pain", but the rules say he can't have medication for any illness or injury related to training.
-Back at his dwelling, Jonas realizes that his family doesn't know of pain.
-Now his daily training contains pain. One day after receiving the memory of hunger, Jonas asks the giver what wisdom you get with hunger. The giver then tells him about the time some citizens suggested that birth mothers give birth to four children instead of three. The strongest memory he got was of hunger and he told the elders not to go with the suggestion.
-At night, when Jonas attempts to calm Gabriel, he accidentally transmits a memory of sailing on a lake to her.

-Jonas asks the giver if he thinks about release. Then he asks what happened to the failed receiver of memory.
-The woman's name is revealed to be Rosemary. She was intelligent, eager to learn. For the first five weeks the giver gave her only happy memories that made her laugh. Rosemary however, wanted more difficult memories. The giver then gave her loneliness and loss. Eventually she couldn't take it anymore and applied for release. The memories spread over the community and everyone had access to the memories. Since then, receivers couldn't apply for release.
-Chapter 19 is the most disturbing chapter. Jonas asks the giver why he doesn't want them to release one twin just because it's identical to the other twin. The giver shows him the process through the hall of open records. At first it's just like how his father told him, until father injects a liquid into the baby's scalp vein and Kills it. This was also what happened with Rosemary, except she wanted to inject herself.
