Türkiye has committed to implement the SDGs and has already achieved 16 of the 123 SDG targets for which comparable data are available². However, there are also many challenges and opportunities for Türkiye to advance its green economy and sustainable development agenda.

Green economy is a concept that aims to achieve economic growth and development while preserving the environment and natural resources. It is closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030¹.

Turkey is a country that has a large and dynamic construction sector, which accounts for about 9% of its GDP and employs about 2 million people³. However, the construction sector also has a significant environmental impact, as it consumes about 40% of the energy and 60% of the water in the country, and generates about 30% of the greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of the solid waste. Therefore, there is a need for a greener construction sector in Turkey, which can help the country achieve its national and international commitments on climate change, energy efficiency, and sustainable development.

There are some initiatives and policies that aim to promote a greener construction sector in Turkey, such as:

- The Energy Efficiency Law No. 5627 and the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulation, which set the standards and requirements for improving the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing their carbon footprint.

- The Communique on the Implementation of Green Certificates for Buildings and Settlements, which establishes a voluntary certification system for green buildings based on six criteria: site selection and planning, energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, building materials and life cycle, and disaster management.

- The Green Transformation Program, which is a joint project of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the United Nations Development Programme, which aims to support the implementation of green building policies and practices, and to raise awareness and capacity among the stakeholders.
