Ismail Shakil also writes for reuters. He is a breaking news journalist, but from his twitter, it appears he works out of Ottawa.

He still covered a lot of the stabbing incident in Saskatchewan, but it seemed like he was less of a true primary source as he worked out of Ottawa. Entirely possible that he traveled for interviews and such.

I think primary sources are crucial to informed news. I think the more a story is related and passed from person to person, the more bias is introduced, because people are able to pick and choose what they pass along. It is much more likely for a primary source to tell a story with as much truth as possible, at least from their perspective. It is furthermore important to glean information from multiple primary sources in order to piece together a full story.

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - "The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, branded as CBC/Radio-Canada, is a Canadian public broadcaster for both radio and television. It is a federal Crown corporation funded by the government. The English- and French-language service units of the corporation are commonly known as CBC and Radio-Canada, respectively." Wikipedia

CBC is government funded, but I think it is good to have some news come from the government. What I have learned most over this process is you need to have a variety first and foremost and if some of that variety comes from the government, that is good.

One thing that was nice about CBC, that I haven't seen on any U.S. sources, was they had an entire Indigenous section, where much like World news or Politics or Sports, there was an Indigenous tab that pulls up any and all articles having to do with indigenous people. This was anything from the mass stabbing, to new indigenous people being elected to various positions, or outrage over unclean water. It was good to see coverage of these topics. People are often understandably frustrated with the Canadian government for the lack of assistance they have provided to indigenous people. My only hope is this coverage helps educate people of the problem.

Established in 1992 and maintained by governmental funding to broadcast in Canada's northern territories, APTN acquired a national broadcast licence in 1999." Wikipedia

This was a REALLY neat find. All of the articles are about indigenous people. You can filter by province to narrow it down. It is amazing to see indigenous people with a voice like this. There are so many facets of indigenous people's life that get overlooked and these stories, written by those they are about, really help to shine a light on their circumstances and things they want to fight for.

AP News is an American non-profit that is headquartered in New York City. They produce news and distribute it to other entities. As a result, they often have less biased articles than other news agencies, because they are sending their news to a range of consumers.

This article was regarding the Pope's visit to Canada to apologize for Indigenous abuses by Catholics. I came across this topic a lot and it was interesting to see the range of responses. There was consensus that yes the Pope came to Canada and apologized, but there was not as much consensus when it came to the next steps. Many people are grateful for his words, but others think it is not enough. An apology should only be the beginning of reparations for all of the harm caused over the years.

This was his caption: What is happening on Wet’suwet’en Territory is nothing short of criminal. A crime against the very Indigenous People that local, provincial and federal governments claim to reconciling with. Justice is a joke if we think that Canada can force a fracking pipeline through Unceded Wet’suwet’en territory in direct opposition to the statements and demands of the people who live on the land. Since day one this country has justified the removal and assault of Indigenous People through the lens of resource extraction and economics. What good are the Popes’ words if nothing changes? What good is UNDRIP if the violence continues? The #cgl pipeline is not only a crime against indigneous people, but a climate nightmare. This pipeline will cause an explosion of fracking and gas development in northern “BC” and further drive the heatwaves, floods, droughts and storms that we’ve only seen the start of. If you care about repairing and correcting the horrendous things done to Indigenous People by this country, you must vocally oppose this project. You must speak clearly your support for sovereign Indigenous Nations like the Wet’suwet’en. If you care about your childrens’ future, you must resist all oil and gas expansion. This isn’t complicated. Quit looking the other way.

This is a great example of how a single person can use social media to spread awareness. Luke Wallace is a singer and usually posts music related things, but in this case he is able to use his platform to bring awareness to this travesty.

Not everyone has the skills or ability to become a journalist or spread news that way, but social media can still allow you to stay informed.

It is always still important to know your source and do further research as needed.
