Trust vs. Mistrust

This stage is the very first stage of Erikson's theory. This stage is from birth until the child is 18 months old. During this stage the child is still trying to learn what is happening in the world. With the child being unfamiliar with the world they look to their primary caregiver to help them figure everything out in life. My parents told me a story about how when I was 7 months old our house caught fire. It was actually their wedding day. They said there were firemen and cops running around everywhere. With all of the loud noise and panic the only person that could calm me down was my mom singing to me.

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

This is the second stage of Erikson's theory. This stage lasts from 18 months to the age of 3 years old. This stage is when the child starts developing physical skills and they start trying to have some independence. My parents said when I was 2 years old my grandmother had a rocking horse. I used to try to climb onto the horse by myself constantly but I would never let my parents help me. This was my way of showing autonomy.

Initiative vs. Guilt

This is the third stage of Erikson's theory. This stage lasts from the ages 3 to 5. When I was five my grandmother allowed me to start dressing myself. She said I never had matching clothes on and sometimes I even put on two different shoes but because she left me do this I developed initiative.

Industry vs. Inferiority

In the fourth stage, it lasts from the age of 5 to 12 years old. At this stage, children begin looking at their peers and start comparing themselves to others. I remember when I was eleven years old, I came home from school and asked my mother why everyone else could solve math problems faster than I could. I was very upset and my mother explained to me that if I studied more and practiced the math problems that I can be just as good as my peers. When she explained that she helped me gain industry.

Identity vs. Role Confusion

The fourth stage lasts from twelve to eighteen years of age. In this stage the teenager is trying to figure out what their goals are and who they really are. I remember when I was sixteen years old I was discussing college with my English teacher. She said," What is that you plan to do in life?" I remember thinking very hard about my goals and dreams and then I realized that I would one day become an elementary educator. That day I found my identity by setting my goal for my future.

Intimacy vs. Isolation

The fifth stage of this theory lasts from the ages of 18 to 40 years of age. This is when people start forming relationships. I developed a relationship that lasted three years. During these three years I gained bonus children and a beautiful engagement ring. Two months ago things started falling apart very quickly. I have since then ended this relationship. This is an example of me displaying isolation.

Generativity vs. Stagnation

In the seventh stage, is when people start building their lives with their families and their careers. This stage is from the ages of forty to sixty-five. In the future, I plan to be fully involved with my career as an elementary educator. I will be married with several children running around. I will be displaying generativity.

Ego Integrity vs. Despair

In the last stage of Erikson's theory, this is the period when people begin to look at their life and their accomplishments to see if they were successful. This stage is from sixty-five to death. In the future, I will look back at all the accomplishments I have made with my family and career and think about how proud I am of everything I have accomplished. I will display ego integrity.
