Animal body parts were meant to symbolize the powers of that god or goddess. Some of the more famous deities were Ra (the sun god, and also known as the creator god), Bastet (the cat goddess who was associated with the sun and fertility), Anubis (god of the dead and judger of souls) and Isis (goddess of magic, healing, and motherhood).

The bird, upon its death, would burst into flames and then rise again from the ashes, essentially born again. The cry of a phoenix is said to be a beautiful song, and its tears are said to have healing properties. Spirits would pass through on the boat of the sun god, Ra, facing many monsters and evils along the way. The Duat had many layers and levels, each one with a different purpose. The deepest level was said to contain the chaos snake Apohis, the embodiment of evil and chaos, and the opposite force of Ma'at, goddess of order and creation. Atum gave birth to a son, Shu (god of the air) and a daughter, Tefnut (goddess of mist and moisture). Shu and Tefnut separated order and light from chaos and darkness, creating Ma'at - represented by a feather, pure and light. They had Geb, god of the earth, and Nut, goddess of the sky, who let things grow on the earth and changed day into night. When Shu and Tefnut were lost in the dark, chaotic waters of Nu, Atum went searching for them. Once found, Atum weapt tears of joy which hit the earth and became men.
