The American citizens lost so much business because at that point most of their business was with europe. finally when people continued to demand the act to be repealed congress passed a law letting anybody trade with any country except for Great Britain or France

In 1813,  a fleet of British were defeated at Lake Erie by Captain Oliver Hazard Perry. Americans also tried to invade Canada from Detroit, but were repelled. After the defeat of the French in 1814 however, the British were able to put more resources into the war. Great Britain planned to attack in three regions, through New York in the north, D.C. and Baltimore on the east coast, and New Orleans in the south. British troops were forced back at the Battle of Plattsburg in New York. The attack on the east cost was more successful. D.C. was captured and several buildings were burned, including the White House and the Capitol. Luckily, First Lady Dolley Madison did not flee until several national treasures were saved. The British followed up their attack on the capital by sailing into the Baltimore harbor and attempting to take Fort McHenry. Despite heavy bombardment, the fort was not destroyed. Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer who was on one of the British vessels, witnessed the attack unfold. In the morning, he was thrilled to discover that the fort's flag still flew. He wrote a poem, which later was called "The Star-Spangled Banner" and is now our national anthem. However the war did bring several important changes. This war also showed that America can hold its own against Great Britain. From this war several new Heroes emerged such as the well known Andrew Jackson who then became president. There was also an important military leader named General William Henry Harrison. The U.S had felt a sense of nationalism from this war, which means pride in one's country. This made it so America wanted to constantly expand the borders of the United states. African Americans also contributed to the war. Approximately 10-20% of U.S sailors were African American. This strengthened their claims for full citizenship. After the end of the war against Napoleon, Europe went into a state of peace which will last almost 100 years. America also entered a time of tremendous growth.

In response, France tried to keep American goods from getting to Britain. The Embargo act of 1807 stopped trade with Europe, smuggling became common because of how many people lost their source of income. The American people were against this act and wanted it to be repealed. In 1809 congress passed a law stating that U.S. ships could trade with all countries except Britain or France. The U.S was in the process of moving westward and expanding their territory down south into Native American lands. Native Americans and the British had been working together to raid U.S settlements because tensions between the U.S and both the British and Native Americans were high. In 1811 President Madison sent Henry Harrison to fight against Tecumseh and his forces, Harrison won the Battle of Tippecanoe Creek and turned Tecumseh's village into ruins. Americans were becoming much more impatient and angry with the British. Although some citizens wished to fight the british, President Madison wanted to avoid war. A group of people in congress thought that winning another war against the british would allow the United States to gain more territory, so they spoke out. In June of 1812 President Madison finally listened to the war hawks and the war of 1812 began.
