To strengthen one's faith, one must suspend disbelief. In Pi's case, his faith is tested to an extent few can imagine. Richard Parker, a figment of Pi's imagination created in response to trauma, was the motivation for Pi's survival (absolute). Completing the agonizing journey, Pi expresses his desire for closure with his companion (participle). Pi wishes he had conveyed to Richard Parker, "I owe you more gratitude than I can express. I couldn't have done it without you” (155). At this time, Pi's suspension of disbelief returns to a less extreme degree as the trauma subsides.
