In second grade - I think it is important to work from the beginning of the year with the students who need support and in the beginning of the year assessment showed that they need repetition and support. This includes having in-person adults available to help troubleshoot in the classroom especially in the first few weeks! Having the consistency of daily learning is incredibly important and we see the differences in progress between those students who meet daily and those who meet 2x per week. While having smaller groups of up to 4 students is really nice; when paired with an assistant teacher it is absolutely possible to have a larger group of 6-8 students. Working with the assistant teacher makes it easier to support struggling 1st graders within the group.
