Dig through your puppet drawers and see if you can find some mice, make a snake out of a green sock and have fun retelling this classic counting tale in real time. You can also use any plastic jar and have kids guess how many mice it will take to fill it. Guessing volume is math y’all!

You can easily make these with scraps of felt and the song is a snap to learn too. This activity would work well with laminate paper and magnets too. Have parents and caregivers make their own sets to take home for counting and color fun too! Here’s a link to the Jbrary video

Five green and speckled frogs

An oldie but a goodie for sure, this counting rhyme still delights little kids. Also, since it is kind of timeless, I would guess most parents and caregivers are already familiar with it. Add extra math by having kids do subtraction and addition as you count the frogs from the log into the pool. Why not talk about how many frogs actually fit on the log. Is there space for one more? And don’t forget to compare the sizes of the frogs and flies! Yum, yum! Here’s a link to the Jbrary video

Probably my favourite new math resource, I think this would be very easy to turn into a measuring game. Grab some measuring tapes from the dollar store and have fun getting the adults and kids measuring along with the little darling in this story. If you are growing plants in the library garden, measure them too!

This book can emphasize numeracy regarding quantities of objects during storytime. In your story time you can say “When Sal’s mother was putting the blueberries in the pail, there were a lot of berries, but when Sal took them out, there were a little.” And when you talk with children about quantities by pointing asking “Is this a lot or is this a little?” you are actually showing them that the amount of objects can change. When you add some, you get more, and when you take away, you get fewer. Asking simple questions like this when looking at two groups of objects and talking about them in this way, helps to develop their numeracy skills.
