KWL Chart

Give each student three sticky notes. Then tell the students what topic we are headed into. On one sticky note each student will write down at least one thing they already know about this topic. On the next they will write what they would like to know. On the last one they will save until after the unit is through to write down at least one thing they have learned. These will then develop into a class-wide KWL chart.

Each group would be made up from each table. Each group would get a piece of paper divided into however many students are in that group with the topic written in the center. All group members would write down what they know about the topic. Then I would ring a bell signaling to the groups to rotate to the next group's brainstorm. This pattern would continue until each group as seen all brainstorms.

Think- Ink- Pair- Share

I would ask each student to get out a half-sheet of paper and write down all of what they know on a given topic. They would then stand up and mingle around the room, I would shout "STOP" and each student would high five the nearest peer and stand back to back. Then I would shout "SHARE" in which they'd turn around and share what they wrote down. This would continue two more times.

Yes/No Cards

I would prepare a list of introduction type questions based on the topic yet to be covered. I'd ask each question and the students would hold up their cards of yes or no depending on if they knew the answer. I would then call on somebody who knew the answer to tell what it is. The students would then write that answer on the sheet I passed out with each of these questions on it.

I would use this piece of technology by using introductory level questions to a given topic. The student would then log on and click on the quiz I made available to them. This is class-paced in that the next question cannot be seen until every student has answered. I would use this technique if the technology were available to do so.

I would do this technique throughout each unit to quickly assess where each student is at during independent work. Something I would also weave into it is to ask a few comprehensive questions to students who seem to be struggling. This would help me to gain an idea of where their thinking is going wrong.
