(Darius) “An excited and highly distempered ideality threw a sulfureous luster over all.”-Pg. 326. This connects to ‘It had supernatural events in the plot and is often bizarre’ because he just yelled out randomly and this was his feeling.

(Darius) “In the greenest of our valleys, By good angels tenanted, Once a fair and stately palace--reared its head. In the monarch Thought’s dominion--It stood there! Never seraph spread a pinion Over fabric half so hair”- Pg. 328. This connects to ‘values the power of the imagination’ because he sees a beautiful valley and a beautiful angel spread its wings in front of him making him feel as if he is in heaven.

Madeline, the sister of Roderick Usher, was very ill. Her illness was so strong and mysterious that no doctor could find a solution to help her overcome it. She died. Roderick, convinced by his friend, the narrator, buried his sister in a tomb and put her in the basement of the house. Roderick, after the death of his sister, was very sorrowful and his friend tried many ways to cheer him up. He sat next to his friend to hear him play the guitar. He listened to him making songs and sing. He read stories to Roderick with the goal of making him feel better. However, Roderick still kept himself in the sorrow of his sister’s death.

In Poe’s writing, he used many difficult vocabulary words and sentence structure. Two difficult vocabulary words that can be found in this section are phantasmagoric and futility.

(Bryan) ”The disease of the lady Madeline had long baffled the skill of her physicians.”-pg. 326

The connection is that it was often mysterious, because no doctor had ever seen anything like it before so he had to make sure they wouldn’t take the body and do things with it.

(Bryan) “I have just spoken of that morbid condition of the auditory nerve which rendered all music intolerable to the sufferer with the exception of certain effects of stringed instruments.”-pg. 327 The connection I found was that he finds beauty and truth in the supernatural and the inner world of the imagination. The reasoning behind this is that the stringed instruments are the only thing that he enjoys that is real.
