The Estates General was an assembly comprised of representatives from the three french estates, the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. These people would be summoned by the king to decide on choices made in France. The assembly met for the last time on the fifth of May 1789, the third estate was upset because although they outnumbered the other two estates, their vote could still be overruled. The third estate met on their own and invited the other two estates to join them. They formed the National Assembly and began to take matters into their own hands against the wishes of the king.

On July 14th, 1789, French revolutionaries stormed and successfully seized control of the state prison of Bastille. People were afraid that the king was going to shut down the National Assembly. Not only that, but due to poor harvest the price of bread had been steadily rising, and people were going hungry. The prison was a symbol that represented the oppressive regime of France. This was one of the first big steps towards overthrowing the French monarchy.

After the king and queen had been forced out of their palace in Versailles, they had been confined to Paris and were under watch of the National Guard. King Louis was forced to allow many polices he disagreed with and cooperate with the revolution. The king and queen devised a plan to escape to the Austria Netherlands border, they disguised themselves and left the palace in the night. They made it to the town of Varennes-en-Argonne where they were detained and returned to Paris. This event caused distress within the National Assembly as it destroyed all hope that the king would ever support the revolution. They told the public that the king did not choose to flee, but that he had been kidnapped. But the story quickly fell apart, as King Louis had left behind a manifesto detailing his hatred of the revolution and the constitution.

Anyone who was considered an enemy of the revolution was arrested and then tried. Around 17000 people were executed, but thousands more were executed without trial or died in prison. The death toll is suspected to be about 40,000. This ended when the national convention turned against Robespierre and voted to have him arrested, on July 28th 1794 Robespierre and his supporters were executed.
