Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.

It is important to remember to not say anything to anyone over the internet that you would not say to their face. It is common for people to forget that there is another human on the other side of the screen. Because we can not see the other person, we tend to be less sensitive and react differently than we would if that person was sitting in front of us.

Although it may seem like the standards of behavior are lower online than they are in real life, this is not true. People are more comfortable behind the computer screen. They do not think that they will be caught or believe that they would not face the consequences that they would if they were acting this way in a face to face conversation.

This situation can lead to cyberbullying which is taken very seriously in our society today. It is vital to teach students the importance of netiquette to decrease the chances of them participating in or being a victim of cyberbullying.

Grammar matters.

Speaking clearly and properly is an important part of speaking online. If you do not spell check your work, use bad language, and type in all capital letters, you will not be seen as a professional figure and will also not be taken seriously.

Proper grammar is key in communication. With grammar issues comes misunderstandings and frustration. When someone has to reread something you wrote over and over just to understand what you are trying to say, they will most likely lose interest or give up.

Grammar skills are very useful in life whether it be from education, leadership, employment, or even a social life. Teaching students the importance of proper grammar helps prepare them for success in everyday life as well as improving their clarity, meaning, and intent while speaking.

Cool off before responding to messages in anger.

Not cooling off before responding to someone when you are angry can result in rude comments and saying things that you do not necessarily mean.

Once you say or post something, you can never take those words back. This is why it is important not to respond based on emotions. Doing so can make matters worse and also hurt the person on the other ends feelings. By waiting until you are calmed down, it gives you time to think properly and figure out the best way to say what is on your mind.

Netiquette is important for many reasons. When posting online, anyone and everyone can see what you write, share, tweet, etc. It is important to understand that your words and posts can impact others and we need to be more courteous of what we post. We also need to understand that the internet is a privilege and we should focus our energy on taking advantage of this rather than abusing our power.

More often than not, majority of internet communication consists of us reading something that somebody else has typed. This can cause many issues and result in complications. Following online netiquette will result in establishing and maintaining a positive online reputation as well as helping create positive relationships over the internet.

As a future educator in a world of growing technology, I believe it is important to teach our students the power of netiquette. We need to help them understand the proper way to use the internet and the consequences that come with abusing our internet privileges.

By teaching them this, they may think twice about what they say or post online.

Something I would do to teach my students this is have them play the game telephone. I would create a sentence and the students would have to whisper the sentence to each other until it got back to me. I would then tell them if it was correct or wrong. This would show my students that just because they thought they understood what the other person said, it does not mean that they truly did.
