I was quite surprised by this as I had never heard it before. I can definitely see how that was an issue, as if people knew they were from the Netherlands they'd probably get sent back. But in the Netherlands he was from a rich family, and they were worried he would be drafted into WW1. So him and his brother left. This also happens to be how my Great great Grandfather got to the U.S.
