I used to read this verse as “I give unto men weaknesses that they may be humble.” Until I realized that it actually says “I give unto men weakness” and not “weaknesses.”

For me this is pretty significant. I used to interpret it as the Lord has given me specific, quantifiable weaknesses, like talents, and some have more and some have less. “Weakness” on the other hand is a very universal human trait. I am left open to choose which part of my human weakness I wish to indulge or I wish to strengthen. I may have certain personality traits and gifts that are innate, but depending on the circumstance they could easily be a strength or a weakness. Who is to say!! The Lord says they can be both. The word weakness in general tells me I am not pinned down to certain weaknesses God has given me just to teach me a lesson. No, He has not done that. He wants us to be completely whole. Discovering what weakens us will be a lifelong process as we will continue to have different experiences. I wasn’t born with specific chinks in my armor that it was my duty to discover and straighten out, but rather life will give us dents and dings in places we never thought possible and we are given the opportunity to strengthen those areas until EVERY single area has been beaten and then strengthened, and it’s a complete total spirit and body makeover. It will most likely be the resurrection when I ever see this come to pass, but that’s okay... I’m not expected to be perfect yet... just open my eyes and start the painful process of hammering my chinks out and fortifying those areas one little place at a time.
-Kelli Rich

Earlier in my life verse 4 really helped recognize how the restored gospel and Jesus Christ could help me not feel so adrift in life by allowing Him to “anchor my soul.”

Now in my life, verse 27 is helping me recognize how my weaknesses are an opportunity to draw closer to the Lord. Regardless of being in the boat and being anchored, I need the Lord.

As I seek the Lord in high places I am reminded that both these verses help me have an unencumbered view of the Lord, his majesty, and his love.
