Purpose

The purpose was to capture to be grateful for what you have, specifically being the family you have. Along with this it is shown how little time we have together. An example being when Kang Kye-yeol was talking about how she gave birth to 12 children but only 6 managed to survive. The second being when after the family fight, the couples son came to Jo Byeong-man in his dying state apologizing to his father and essentially begging for forgiveness. The last being the realization of Kang Kye-yeol that her husband was dying.

Achieving The Purpose

I feel that this purpose was achieved through the use of perspective. When Kang Kye-yeol talks about her children you see her perspective which that of a mother. This is important because it conveys a sense of loss, a mothers pain which would be relatable to any mother or parental figure. Relatable meaning that when you have children all you want to do is give them the best that you can provide. Hearing her talk about her children and see her pain makes one thankful for the well being of their own children or unfortunately, you might relate to her pain. Second, capturing the family fight puts you in the place of both parties shoes. The shoes of old couple because throughout the film they are shown happy and pretty careless and anything they do pretty much warms your heart. So when you see how they are treated by their son, you feel sorry for them. You are put into the shoes of their family because after seeing what the married couple are like, you see there is much to appreciate about them. You can understand their daughters frustration along with the simple fact of they're very old and every moment with them is precious.

My Love, Don't Cross That River has indeed make me reflect on my own life and family relationships. For my own life, this film has given me insight on to what another culture is like and has left me comparing my own to theirs. They sleep on the floor, bow when greeting someone, has given my some insight to how active they are for being so aged. A culture shock to me was how everything is smaller in size; their portions, their table, ect. I had previously known this but it still blows my mind every time I see it. For my family relationships, this film has made me see Jo Byeong-man and Kang Kye-yeol as my own grandparents and honestly I tried not cry the entire film because of this. Although my own grandparents are much younger, being in their mid and late sixties, my own grandfather has troubles of his own. The Vietnam War has left him with health problems caused by Agent Orange. So when I Jo Byeong-man struggling to walk, I just see my grandfather.
