At the beginning f the class, with the starter, I try to arouse their curiosity and interest about the topic. I try to make tasks and activities personal relevant to them in the now and also to make them see the future utility of what they are learning because I have found that helps with sustaining the interest. Moreover, I try make the activities as much as much optimally challenging so that they are engaged and they feel competent and empowered. Motivation is a very complex area made of many interrelated factors.

I find that creating competition between the learners increases their engagement in any topic. Whether it's between individual learners or small groups/teams, having an element of tension enhances their focus, raises the "fun" factor, and increases engagement. The challenge is sometimes managing the excitement and noise level, but those are positive signs of all the learners being actively involved.

Motivating Special Needs Learners

With some special needs learners, i've found that I have to be very careful with extrinsic motivation, especially using "the stick" and not the "carrot". If they're not engaging in the material, using more punitive or the threat of punitive measures, such as staying in at break to complete work or missing out on free reading time, only causes them to dig in their heels more and hinders the process far more than it helps. Visual Cue cards with expectations clearly laid out (time, goals, etc) are very useful for the learners to understand what they need to accomplish for the lesson and/or school day.

Motivating Children

I have observed teachers motivating children in various ways. For the most part it is a combination of techniques and can vary depending on the class or outcome required. Techniques such as; getting the children engaged in the subject with a short hook, a rewards scheme, encouraging competition. In addition, sincere encouragement and belief in their abilities coupled with an appropriate level task.

(Intrinsic)Connecting learning with their passions/interests helps them be motivated and interested. Connect learning with the world around them (authentic/meaningful). With learners new to English, visual cards, pictures, stories, modelling, acting, songs connected with the topic in question always helps makes it interesting and more fun. Another way to help EAL learners or second language learners is to pair them up with someone who speaks English so there is peer support and is at their pace. Stimulating questions- creating a culture of curiosity and wonder and questioning. Setting a culture in the classroom where mistakes are celebrated and seen as learning curves always makes a difference- there is no wrong answer or idea and we are all learning together (no threat environment). Hands on learning/painting/craft/various ways to teach something. Put your child in the drivers seat- get the responsible for their own learning. Make learning FUN! Choice- being able to have the choice between having to do something and wanting to do something. Lots more which will be fun to discuss during the session tomorrow

I've used fun to get kids motivated. This is not something that I did in school but in a community environment. I was teaching children how it's important to always be kind to others even when they've perhaps not been so kind to us. To get the excitement going, and to engage by having fun, I divided the kids into pairs. Then each child had to take a slice of lemon which had something not so pleasant tasting on it (but edible of course) and put it in their mouth. They then had to say something nice to their partner, without making a face! We had lots of fun and laughs before we went on to our discussion. It was a great start to the rest of the lesson with all kids engaged.

Vaishali.
