Community Collaboration Reflection

A keen sense of community creates a supportive environment where students feel valued and connected, leading to increased engagement and motivation in their studies. This leads to student achievement and higher attendance rates. It also gives the students a sense of belonging and shares their responsibility for education with the community. The school and community can collaborate and produce the needs and challenges that the student may be facing, for example, specific resources and extra programs. Community involvement also gives the students the opportunity to involve and identify with real world learning opportunities. Zacarian and Silverstone argue (2015), “that change is only possible when students, teachers, families, the school community, and the community at large are all working collaboratively to ensure that education works for everyone, and they call on teachers across the U.S. to furnish them with much-needed examples in practice.” Listening to volunteer community speakers and doing firsthand projects with local business owners strengthen their understanding of their role in the community. They are more likely to associate social and emotional well-being to develop positive relationships, build empathy, and learn to navigate social situations effectively. The community can be directly involved in classroom interaction. A community member of a small business matched with a student one on one by their interest. For example, pairing a future accountant with a tax preparer business to mentor, can offer guidance and support in academics, career exploration, or personal development. In Pittman and Zarzeski article (2002), “According to student feedback, accounting professionals in the classroom provide a very effective real-life learning experience for students.” A guest speaker of an engineer invited to speak and share their knowledge and experiences related to the curriculum of science. According to Robinson (2018), “Career awareness is important, especially for rural and underserved populations who may have even less exposure to the types of careers available to them.” Someone in the community committing to volunteer their time to help an educator grade paper is a simple task that would tremendously still help in the classroom. There are assorted ways the community should be involved in the classroom to encourage the success of students.

Metrejean, C., Pittman, J., & Zarzeski, M. T. (2002).
