Discuss how class time is used. How much of class time is spent on academic work, on cultural presentations, on paperwork (attendance, etc.), on extracurricular, on school spirit, on academically irrelevant personal stories, on extracurricular activities, and so on? If you observe different levels (AP, honors, academic, ICR), how is this different depending on the level?

After Core 1 all of the sixth grade students gathered in the "Wolf Den." During this presentation, students were informed about important announcements. Also the children played a minute to win it game where 3 representatives of each two teams tried to move an Oreo down their face and into their mouth. After the game, the students where asked to sit down to listen to announcements. Although this was not a classroom setting, teachers used a couple of classroom management skills to get the children to calm down and be quiet. They clapped raised their arms to get the attention of the students. Afterwards, the teachers told the students that they would like to create a chant for the sixth grade class. This is an example of building up school spirit and unity.

After the Wolf Den students were taken, class by class, to go outside and play for about a half an hour. I talked to my corresponding teacher about what classroom management tools she uses. She told me that she likes to use the mannequin challenge as a way to get her students to stop what they are doing and pay attention. She also developed another "challenge" called the nap challenge to get students to lay their heads down and turn the lights off so they will be quiet and attentive. We also talked about preparing for content knowledge in the classroom and how a lot of outside research for teachers is required in order to really master the content they teach to their students. Mrs. Terry told me not to worry, though, because there are many resources to help new teachers with this.

Shortened Class Time

After the Wolf Den and the Fun Friday outdoor activity. Students were dismissed to their core 2 classes. In this class students had about 20 minutes of personal time to read their class book. The first 5 minutes were spent returning interim report cards. Mrs. Terry sent three boys out of the room to go to the "wolf den" to go "read." She knew that the boys would be a distraction to the rest of class so she sent them out to go work independently. After the class read, they went to the book fair. Most students focused on the cool gadgets that were being sold and not the books. Some students really had an interest in some of the books being sold. Many did not have the money to buy anything at the book fair. Students were told how to line up by Mrs. Terry to and from the book fair. She had one of her students time how quickly they got to and from the book fair to make a game out of how well they could behave. The students seemed to like it and it got them to listen more.
