Similar to the two other main characters, Gardo contributed greatly in solving the mystery. An example can be given of the time he visited Senator Zepanta in prison. Gardo, being the bravest out of the three, risked his life numerous times. An example can be given of the time he risked his chances to meet Gabriel Olondriz in prison, and another example can be given of the time he met up with Marco in China town, despite knowing the deadly risks that came with it. Gardo also memorised the entirety of Jose Angelico’s letter and the numeral instructions, in fear that it may be taken from him. ‘You did right not to bring the letter (pg 131).’ By committing the acts described above, Gardo contributed to solving the mystery of Jose Angelico’s letter.

Hardships

Gardo, since childhood, had gone through numerous hardships. As a dumpsite boy, Gardo had been picking trash since he was little. ‘I work with Gardo most of the time, and between us we move fast. Some of the little kids and the old people just poke, and poke, like everything’s got to be turned over (pg 60.’ The latter strongly implies that Gardo, along with Raphael, spent most of their time in a despicable environment sorting trash, breathing in foul air. They’ve been doing so since they were small children. It had not been mentioned directly, but it could be assumed Gardo was missing parental figure. ‘He’s taken more beatings than me (pg 8),’ and the fact that Gardo lived with his uncle further proves the solidness of this hypothesis. His cold attitude clearly reflects on what Gardo has gone through since a young age.

At first glance, Gardo gave off the impression that he was a cold, calculative, and overall mature person, however, he was more than that. Gardo’s past had not been spoken about or mentioned in the book, but it is clear that he has been with Raphael for quite a long time, who exclaims that ‘I can pull out the paper and plastic fast, so I don’t do so bad (pg 60)’ Gardo often rested at Raphael’s house and spent most of his time with him, and not his own home with his uncle. It could be speculated that Gardo’s reluctance to go back to his own home could be driven from domestic abuse. That would explain his mature and cautious attitude towards unknown things; he had grown to be doubtful and cautious in order to survive. Evidence of such behaviour could be given of the impression he gave father Julliard. ‘I could feel him staring right at me, as if he might have to fight (pg 51).’ Gardo started to show more emotions as the story progressd; emtions such as kindness and fear. ‘I could see he was feeling bad so we said that if we got the bible, if the bible gave away the great Jose Angelico mystery-and if we got the pile of money-we would put the twenty thousand back in the mission school, with some added as a gift(pg. 148).’ An example of his fear could be given of the questions he created in his mind, such as ‘What if they have the whole place surrounded? What if they’re all there in plain clothes, waiting for me, and I don’t see them till it’s way too late late? (pg 149). Despite his cool attitude, Gardo showed us that he is a layered character.
