Introduction:
Inspired by Night, my theme is relying on yourself in order to survive. In the memoir, we see this theme repeated throughout, as sons abandon their fathers as an aim to become independent. This is important as we see sons learn the moral, if one wants to survive, one has to be independent. In an environment where there is almost no food and sanitary shelter, one must do everything possible to survive. Unlike Eliezer, other children have learned that depending on themselves is the only way to escape from hunger. They soon discover that those who do not live long will only pull them down. Whether they are family or friends, one must turn away from them to move on. I want the viewer to understand the characters’ situation, that at the moment, this was the only solution they could think of. I want the viewer to remember how different life is today. I want them to appreciate what we have now, the environment, and the situations we experience on a daily basis, how it’s better than before. We are fortunate to not have been subjected to the tortures and humiliations that the Jews experienced during the time of the Holocaust. We are blessed with ample food and sanitation. This exhibit walks through the life of a Jew. The difference compared to today is motivating and encourages one to change for the better. However, I also want the viewers to think about relying on themselves. As an adult, it is inevitable that one must rely on themselves. However, as a child, one continuously hears their parents telling them to become more independent. We still see this theme echoed today, and I want the viewers to see how the theme today differs from that of the memoir.
