  • The Twelve Tables were the first set of written laws in ancient Rome.
  • These were a set of twelve tables that had all of the Roman Laws inscribed onto them.
  • They were hung in the center of Rome so that the Patricians wouldn’t be able to bend the laws in their favor.
  • The Twelve Tables established the idea that everyone had protection from the law.

  • The Digest was a compilation of laws that summarized all of the Roman Laws written till that point.
  • The laws were written by four main juries but there were other juries who also contributed towards the document
  • The Digest was heavily influenced by the Twelve Tables with some of the laws being directly taken from it.
  • These set of laws was also different in many ways by modernizing all of the laws to fit the current time period.

  • The Decretum took heavy inspiration from Roman Law and used many rules and laws that the Romans used in their time.
  • This was written by a jurist called Gratian who was a canon lawyer.

  • The Bill of Rights is a document containing the first ten amendments to the constitution.
  • The document was made and written by many people but two of the main contributors were: James Madison and Thomas Jefferson
  • The Bill of Rights ensured that the government didn’t have full power and that the citizens could be safe and that they could keep their personal property and have the right to bear arms.
  • The Twelve Tables inspired the Bill of Rights heavily because the Twelve Tables also ensure that citizens would have freedom and would be able to have complete control of their property, the Bill of Rights took on this exact idea and ensured this to their citizens.
  • This document still affects our society, government and legal system to this day showing how the Twelve Tables is still affecting us as a Roman Legacy.
