Uno dei luoghi più importanti per la storia del cristianesimo è sicuramente la città di Cesarea in Palestina, situata nel nord di Israele.
La Cesarea di cui parliamo oggi si trova sulla costa mediterranea e la sua costruzione fu iniziata da Erode il Grande nel periodo immediatamente precedente la nascita di Gesù. (25-13 a.C.). Nelle intenzioni doveva essere la città più maestosa del mondo per dimostrare l’assoluta fedeltà a Cesare Augusto. Di fatto, per importanza divenne nel giro di breve tempo il secondo porto del mondo allora conosciuto.

La città ha una storia lunghissima, per anni fu il principale presidio dei romani in Palestina e fu distrutta completamente nel 1291 dopo essere stata conquistata da arabi e crociati. Nelle vicinanze del teatro e precisamente sopra l’ippodromo si trova un’iscrizione in cui si cita Ponzio Pilato, unica prova storica documentale del personaggio dei vangeli. Sono ancora visibili anche i resti di un doppio acquedotto che trasportava l’acqua fin dalle sorgenti del monte Carmelo.
