This was a negative event because getting kicked out of Pencey increased Holden's inability to confide in his parents resulting in his thoughts about running away and never looking back. Furthermore, getting kicked out of Pencey resulted in him going on this journey ( the whole book) which got him beat up Maurice, damage his "relationship" with Sally Hanson and possibly been almost harassed by his favorite teacher.

Holden's Encounter with the Nuns

Though this isn't a major event in the book, Holden's interaction with the nun showed him to be someone who is charitable and compassionate. Usually, when Holden meets anybody, he considers them a "phony". But when meeting the nuns, he almost feels sympathy towards them and describes them as kind and someone who doesn't conform themselves into stereotypical followers of a religion. These nuns, also gave Holden what he had been craving, a conversation with someone and maybe to feel just a little less alone.
