After being adopted by his uncle, he used the name Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus, which was his legal name.

Some saw Brutus as a traitor to Caesar, his friend, and ruler. Others considered Brutus a patriot who helped bring down a tyrant in the hope of preserving the Roman Republic.

Brutus and Cassius had to fight Caesar’s supporters, led by Mark Antony and Octavian. Antony defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius at Philippi in Greece in 42 B.C., leading Brutus to commit suicide.

After the Battle of Pharsalus, he surrendered himself to the opposing army. Caesar forgave him and set him free.

  • When Brutus was planning out how to assassinate Julius, Portia was invested because he wouldn't tell her his plan, so to show her loyalty to him, she stabbed herself in the thigh so he could trust her.
  • After Portia heard that Brutus died in the battle of Phillippi, thinking that he was dead, she grew depressed, and knowing that Antony and Octavian would rise to power, she killed herself by swallowing hot coals.
She died in 42 B.C.

Brutus is the tragic hero in this tragedy because he struggles between killing Caesar or not and later whether he did the right thing or not. This leads up to his death. Caesar is still relevant in modern society due to his tremendous influence on culture, language, military and political tactics, the invention of a current calendar, and his iconic representation of the Roman Empire.
