I love thinking about nutrition! My mind was blown when I recently realized that Iron needs Vitamin C + no_dairy to get absorbed and that made me rethink how I cook spinach! This is my initial brainstorm on what food theme I would like to explore

I’m doing Awareness/Data collecting and Insight/INIWIRMO concurrently. My intent is to enjoy cooking dinner. Or I would settle for less resentment over time spent cooking. Lots of side benefits on this journey. Very interesting for me having had a career in nutrition.

This definitely ended up being a sacrificial pancake for me (haha), but I learned so much!

First, I learned more about where my food was being distributed - mostly from CA, and reading the labels of things got me wondering more about how modern food is sourced, and what information brands decide to (or decide not to) put on labels. One of my coconut milk cans proudly declared, "No monkey labor"... is that a thing? Also, my olive oil honestly reported "contains oil from one or more of the following: Argentina, Australia, Chile, Spain, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Peru, Portugal, Tunisia, Turkey" - a long list which I expect would be more of the rule if other brands actually included their sources.

I also learned a little about data visualization itself. (a) I don't have much of a data vis vocabulary yet, so coming up with a way to represent the data was hard. I ended up getting the Lupi and Posavec book, and Miriam's Pyrosketchology, which have some wonderful examples. (b) I started out by putting the information haphazardly onto the page (second picture) and then decided that I should try again and make it more tidy. However, for me it's actually easier to read with the distribution categories spatially distributed as well as in different colors, which makes spatial layout an interesting 'information container' to add to the four that Gargi presented at Wild Wonder (shape, size, color, and mark).

WIP - Tracking nutrients and balanced meals

My goal is to notice my eating habits post the holiday gorging. My body is craving more home cooked meals, and at the same time there are remnants of the holiday period — my body has been craving sugar and snacks all the time which is quite unlike me. I’ve also started bringing exercise back into my routine.

I am tracking data on a daily basis to see what my transition period looks like without actively / explicitly setting “goals” or influencing habits. Just monitoring what my body naturally seeks without judgement.
