👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
(1) WHAT: What are the element and principles of art?
Elements:
- Line: Considered as moving dot, creates outline (contour lines), illusion (line quality), shadow and form (cross contour lines).
- Shape: Is an enclosed line, it is two-dimensional. There are geometric shapes, regular shapes, and organic shapes.
- Forms: three dimensional objects. There are geometric forms and organic forms.
- Colors: Reflected light. It can be broken down into the color wheel ,color values, and color scheme.
- Space: Area around an object. Ways to create space are overlap, placement, size, detail, color and value, and perspective.
- Texture: The way an object feels. There are 3D textures, visual textures, 2D textures, rough and smooth textures, matte, and impasto.
Principles:
- Balance: The way the elements are arranged to create stability in a work.
- Proportion: The comparative relationship of a part to another in scale.
- Unity: All the elements and principles combined to create a pleasing image
- Harmony: Visually satisfying effect of combining similar elements.
- Variety: Using differences and changes to to increase the visual interest of a work.
- Emphasis: The focus point on an image, the thing that stands out the most.
- Rhythm: A continuance feeling of movement achieved by repetition of visual information.
- Movement: Visual flow of an artwork.
The information above are all conventions of art set by the people before.

To me, the elements of art should be knowledge, creativity (innovation), and purpose; and the principles of art would be theme, imagery, and form...etc.

(1-2) WHAT: Describe what you see or find from Mandala images or artworks. (Google the images.)
From the mandala image that I found from the internet, I see a lot of circles (rings) that has different sizes, symmetrical decorations, I also see different patterns inside the circle. There are different colors for each pattern, and the patterns are very meticulous.

(2) SO WHAT: Upload an artist's work which depicts the element or principle of art. Tell us what element(s) or principle(s) of art that artist applied.
I uploaded an image - It is one of Picasso's paintings. The elements and principles that he used are:
- Lines: there are a lot of lines, straight ones, curved ones, horizontal ones, vertical, and diagonal ones.
- Shapes: there are rectangles, circles, and polygons.
- Colors: It uses colors like blue, yellow, orange, and white, which are contrasting and bright colors.
- Balance: the two taller object are placed together in the left, and the two shorter objects on the right is filled with a object on the top.
- Variety: the four (or five) different objects in the painting are all different in shape, color and size, so it creates a playful feeling to the image.

(3) SO WHAT: What are the most important/ intriguing/ relevant/ useful aspect(s) of the Mandala design?
The elements and principles of art are used for artists to create their works, however, the old conventions of art are already outdated, artists now have newer ideas and ways to create their artwork, so they have new definitions of the elements and principles of art. From the mandala designs we can see that mandala is made up of repeating lines and shapes, in a circular order.

(4) WHAT NEXT: (In the process journal...)

(1) WHAT: What are the element and principles of art?

- Creativity
- Have some knowledge of the art
- thinking
- Line: In terms of art, line is considered a moving dot or the path of a dot, and line can be used to define edges, add shading or value, and create the illusion of form.
- Shape: Shape is considered a closed contour or the area confined within a contour line. Shapes fall into two categories: geometric or organic. They can be defined as positive or negative and are essential in compositional design.
- Form: Form refers to three-dimensional objects. The illusion of form in a drawing or painting is heavily dependent on the use and placement of values.
- Value: Value is also referred to as "tone". It is the darkness or lightness of a color and can be measured through the use of a value scale. Lighter values are referred to as "tints", while darker values are referred to as "shades". When it comes to drawing and painting, value is arguably the most important element of art.
- Space: In terms of art, space is the area around, above, and within an object. With consideration to drawings and paintings, our goal is to create the illusion of space. There are six ways that an artist can create the illusion of space in a drawing or painting.
- Color: Color is the element of art that refers to reflected light. Although complex, color theory can be broken down into three main components: the color wheel, color values, and color schemes.
- Texture: Texture refers to the way an object feels to the touch or looks as it may feel if it were touched. Texture created in drawings or paintings can be "simulated" or "invented". The illusion of texture is heavily dependent on the use of value.
- Rhythm
- Balance
- Emphasis (contrast)
- Proportion
- Gradation
- Harmony
- Variety

The elements and principles of art are shown above. In my opinion, I think the elements and principles of Today's art are line, shape , color, texture, creativity, thinking, and knowledge of art.

(1-2) WHAT: Describe what you see or find from Mandala images or artworks.

(1) WHAT: What are the element and principles of art?

The element of art are the visual components of color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value.
Line - Art which is defined by the moving point in space. It may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract.
Space - The areas of art which are defined by positive and negative or a sense of depth achieved in the art.
Form - Art which is free flowing or has three-dimensional and encloses volume, including height, width and depth.
Volume - Tones or colors in lightness or darkness. White is the lightest and black is the darkest. Middle gray is the halfway between black and white.
Shape - Art which has two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width.
Color - Art is made up of hue, value, and intensity.
• Hue: name of color
• Value: hue’s lightness and darkness. When white or black is added, value changes.
• Intensity: quality of brightness and purity. High intensity means that color is bright, low intensity means that color is faint.
Texture - Art which refers to the way it feels or looks, if they might be felt and touched.

The principle of art are balance, emphasis (contrast), movement, proportion, rhythm, unity (harmony), and variety, gradation. methods that an artist uses to organize elements within art.
Rhythm - Art which indicates movement, created by the careful placement of repeated elements in art in order to lead to a visual tempo or beat.
Variety - Concern with diversity or contrast, achieved by using different shapes, sizes, and colors in art.
Movement - Creates the look and feeling of action and to guide the viewers' eye throughout the art.
Balance - Art which combines elements in order to add feelings of equilibrium or stability in it. Major types are symmetrical and asymmetrical.
Proportion - The relationship of certain elements to the whole and to each other.
Emphasis (contrast) - Combine elements to stress the differences between them.
Gradation - Combine elements by using a series of gradual changes such as repetitions and subtle in them.
Unity (harmony) - Combine similar elements in art to accent their similarities.

And for me, I think the most important elements are color, line value. It is because different thickness or length of line, brightness and color can create different feelings for people. And the most important principles are balance, proportion and unity. It is because they can let the artwork seem more organized to people.

(1-2) WHAT: Describe what you see or find from Mandala images or artworks. (Google the images.)

I found some Mandala artworks on the Google images, I see most of the mandala artworks are big circles. And inside the circle, there are many small different patterns in it. However, there are still some mandala artworks aren't circle, but they are still form with different patterns in it.

(2) SO WHAT: Upload an artist's work which depicts the element or principle of art. And the principles are rhythm balance (which is symmetrical), proportion, gradation, and harmony.

(3) SO WHAT: What are the most important/ intriguing/ relevant/ useful aspect(s) of the Mandala design?

The most important of the mandala design is, it creates unique beauty to people. The most intriguing of the mandala design is, most of the artworks are a big circle with small patterns inside. For the value, there's bright and dark side in this mandala design, too. For the shape, it is in 2-D format but in the middle it makes the audience feels 3-D.

(1) WHAT: What are the element and principles of art? Do you believe that there are more elements / principles of art? Try to tell us what other elements / principles would be? In other words, nowadays, how would you define a piece of arts or artworks? Do they show us any different elements or principles of art?

Line: is a moving dot and has many uses of the creation of art, which is one of the most basic element of art. There are many types of lines, including horizontal, vertical, diagonal, zig-zags, and curves. There are also variations of lines, such as the width, length and texture of line. Lines can also be used for value and shading, which is known as cross-hatching.

Shape: is created when a line is enclosed, which basically forms a shape. All shapes are two-dimensional, which means that they only have length and width and can be defined by the change in value and contrast. There are 2 main types of shapes, geometric and organic shapes. In art, this could help us in the creation of complex drawings.

Form: refers to 3-D objects with length, width and height. In order to do this, you must create a illusion for the form, which can be done by understanding how light reacts to a object. The factors are highlight, mid-tone, cast-shadow, core shadow, and reflected highlight.

Value: deals with the darkness and lightness of color. The whole purpose of value is to create a illusion of shadows and highlights. Therefore, you must have a light source, without it, there will be no light.

Space: There are 6 ways to create a illusion of space on a 2-D surface including, overlapping, size, placement on paper, detail, color, value and perspective.

Texture: refers to how the artworks feels when it is being touched. To create the illusion of texture, you must pay closely attention to the values.

Color: The color wheel is made out of 3 different types of colors, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary. The primary colors includes red, blue and yellow, which can be mixed into many different colors. All the colors in the wheel are creating by mixing the primary colors. Color value is the lightness and darkness of a color, which can be affected by adding white or black to the original color. Color schemes are a way to put colors together in a intelligent way.

These are some of the basic elements of art, though according to Tr. Finn, there are more elements. The elements I just mentioned are old and are a thing of the past. So I must find the elements that we use today. Here are some of the elements we use today:

Appropriation: when a artist uses his/her inspiration from other artworks, sources, and images and apply them onto their own artwork. It is basically borrowing someone else's artworks and using it on your own artwork.

Time: is to choose a specific moment of time for the content of their work. Artist and change how that specific moment is experienced through their artworks.

Performance: When the artist uses motions and actions to create the artwork, which are usually acts performed to a audience. They basically transform their bodies into paintbrushes to created the finished product.

Hybridity: the usage of unusual materials or a variety to create the artwork, such as recycled and industrial materials to express their ideas by using different techniques and methods to create a artwork.

Perspective: is used to let the viewer see the artwork in a certain point of view. It is a way to create a illusion of space and depth on a 2-dimenisional surface.

Destruction: when an artist uses methods to show damage in or to their artwork. Many times, this destruction is documented as a process, which, in return, becomes the work itself.

Text: to push past
the concept that text is only meant to be read. The
additional meaning from the text adds another level of
depth that cannot be created by shape and color alone.

(1-2) WHAT: Describe what you see or find from Mandala images or artworks. (Google the images.)

Most of the mandala designs I see on Google images are a circle and are in black and white. Many of them have very complicated designs with the usage of lines and shapes inside. Therefore, these complicated designs must represent some sort of meaning to it. From some of the images, I noticed that some of them are related to religions, as you can see that there is a image with a yin & yang symbol on it. I also saw a lot of them with henna designs on them, which gives me a idea that mandala artworks could have originated in Asia. Although, most of them are also related to flowers and plants. In my opinion, I think these artworks look like a cycle with repeated patterns and designs on them, which shows me that balance is also incorporated into the artwork.

(2) SO WHAT: Upload an artist's work which depicts the element or principle of art. Tell us what element(s) or principle(s) of art that artist applied.

The artist of this artwork is Jamie Locke, she is best known for her hand carved mandalas on wood, leather, glass, and metal. Therefore, this shows us that she likes to use a variety of materials when it comes to making mandalas. In this case, this artwork is carved out of wood. In this artwork, she only uses 5 colors, including white, red, blue, purple, and orange, which look really attractive/eye-catching together. I realized that the main colors mostly consist of red and blue. White is also considered as a main color but it is only used as the lines in the mandala. Purple and orange are just secondary colors, which can used in very small details. The rest of the empty spaces are just left blank, which is basically the color of wood. As a result, colors can also symbolize some kind of meaning. Jamie also used a variety of lines, including, straight, curved, and dots. The thickness of the lines remains the same throughout the whole process of this artwork. I really liked how she included dots in her mandala, making the mandala looked more detailed. Just by looking at the mandala, you can see that there are many henna designs, in which is a form of traditional indian art. Therefore, there are many flower petals, which is also a poplar design in henna tattoos. Combined these shapes together will unfold a deeper meaning of this artwork. Flowers symbolizes as joy and happiness. So we can use these elements to express a meaning of artworks. When Jamie create her artworks, she likes to use different methods and mediums, as she also uses her creativity for her motivation in creating mandalas. She is proficient at taking a vision and making it to reality. “For me, the process of creating a mandala is always one of inspired revelation, elemental surprise, and pure bliss.”

(3) SO WHAT: What are the most important/ intriguing/ relevant/ useful aspect(s) of the Mandala design?

From my research, I learned that mandalas are a circle that incorporates many complicated designs in them. From looking at a few pictures of mandalas, I learned that most of them, are symmetrical with repeated patterns. The reason why is because it is a cosmic diagrams that reminds us of our relation is infinite. Therefore, it shows many aspects of life, including the earth, sun, and the moon, which are known as celestial circles. When i first looked at a mandala artwork, it looks really complexed, which makes it look difficult to create. So I did some research on how to create a mandala. When it comes to making mandalas you must first understand the meaning of mandala, which is something I already did in the beginning of this task. It is important that you know what to include in your mandala because there are many symbols that can be included, such as symbols, but this actually depends on what you want to express. Symbols have many reasons and meanings to it.
Here are some examples of mandala symbols that can be used:
- Bell - Lotus
- Dharma wheel - Diamond
- Vajra
So to start off the mandala, you need a pencil and a large piece of paper.
1. Draw a large circle on the paper
2. Find the center
3. Divide into sections
4. Draw guidelines by drawing several circles to create a interesting pattern
5. Begin your design and then building it outward as you move on.
6. Add finishing details
7. Erase pencil marks
8. Bringing mandala to life by adding colors.
These aspects are really helpful for me when it comes to developing my ideas and drawing them on paper.

(4) WHAT NEXT: (In the process journal...) (Google the images.)

Looking at images of different Mandala designs I see that they use a lot if not all elements and principles of art constantly throughout the mandalas. There are a lot of lines weaved together to create different shapes that are put together with a symmetrical balance. Most of the mandalas mainly consist of black lines on a white background, which creates a strong contrast in terms of value. The texture used in mandalas do not have an actual texture, but rather a represented texture with the intricate lines. The space in the mandala designs are negative, due to a design on a blank background. The mandala designs use a great deal of patterns, with the lines and shapes and components constantly repeating in a cycle. However, even though they are constantly repeating, rhythm and movement is not present in most of the mandalas I see, as they are mostly stationary. The proportion of the elements in a mandala is mainly the same, with all components having the same scale. Symmetrical and radial balance is also largely used in mandalas, with constantly repeating sections/slices. Most mandalas also provide a feel of unity, as every line makes a shape, every shape makes a pattern, which are used repetitively in a radial balance to create a complete circle. In most of the mandalas the point of emphasis isn't placed on a single part, the emphasis is on the mandala as a whole because each component in the artwork is equally important.

(2) Upload an artist's work which depicts the element or principle of art.

(1) WHAT: What are the element and principles of art?
These concept of art elements are not new as now day, an art of traditional elements have passed through centuries down this day. Since it is not entirely special or unique, many artists today present their art by using perspective way to create a new concepts.
Perspective drawing is a set of technique used to draw a 3-dimensional scene onto a 2-dimensional surface.
Element of art are The visual components of color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value.
Line An element of art defined by a point moving in space. Line may be two-or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract. Shape An element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width. Form An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width AND depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Form may also be free flowing. Value The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray. Space An element of art by which positive and negative areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work of art . Color An element of art made up of three properties: hue, value, and intensity. • Hue: name of color • Value: hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s value changes when white or black is added) • Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high intensity= color is strong and bright; low intensity= color is faint and dull) Texture An element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched.

(1-2) WHAT: Describe what you see or find from Mandala images or artworks. (Google the images.)
Most of the mandala designs I see in google image mostly are black and white with the round shape. Inside the circle shape of mandala includes line and shape in it. I think it needs to use the space wisely and how does it shown the texture or value in it. The meaning behind these complicated elements can be deep and thoughtful. I think before the time, mandala designs are only in black and white. But now, it is really colorful and it presents vitality. Although I don't know when does mandala can be in another shape, but it seems like people are breaking the rules during the time. She uses the space very wisely, positive and negative area are defined effectively.

(3) SO WHAT: What are the most important/ intriguing/ relevant/ useful aspect(s) of the Mandala design?

The mandala appears to us in all aspects of life, the Earth, the Sun, the Moon and more obviously the circles of life encompassing friends, family and communities.
I think the most important is about the mind in your thought.

(1) WHAT: What are the element and principles of art?
The elements of art are the basic components of art-marking. There are mainly seven elements of art: line, shape, form, value (tone), space, texture, and color. The principles of art deal with the way the elements of art are composed within the artwork - they are an organized way that the elements of art are arranged in an artwork. The elements and principles in art can be compared to the ingredients and recipe (respectively) in cooking. The elements that are incorporated into an artwork must work together to make the artwork look great - like ingredients in any dish. But you must understand how to use these elements together effectively as well, just like how you need a recipe in cooking to know how to make a great dish. The recipe is the principles of art.
The principles of art can be categorized into (eight) concrete principles and (a few other) art fundamentals (debatable). The eight concrete principles are balance, proportion, unity, harmony, variety, emphasis, rhythm, and movement - which clearly deals with the placement of elements in an artwork. But art fundamentals are more like composition, contrast, dominance, content implementation, aesthetics, art criticism, and symbolism. These fundamentals should be understood and implemented by every artist, in order to truly understand and execute their artistic intentions.

(1-2) WHAT: Describe what you see or find from Mandala images or artworks. (Google the images.)
They are mostly symmetrical and give off a sense of balance and harmony. They often come in the form of a circle (looking at the big picture), but if you look closely at the details, they seem to be composed of different shapes and forms but they are all used consistently in patterns. Many contain floral or elements from the nature (like tidal waves) too, and I think this might actually be because nature itself is a representation of different elements working and coexisting with each other, and in Mandala art it seems that harmony and balance is the common artistic intention.

(2) SO WHAT: Upload an artist's work which depicts the element or principle of art. Tell us what element(s) or principle(s) of art that artist applied.
The artwork attached is "Yin Yang Mandala" by Moira Gil (see the attached image below the post). The Mandala Design contains a general structure of a Yin Yang, self-explanatory through the artwork title.

(3) SO WHAT: What are the most important/ intriguing/ relevant/ useful aspect(s) of the Mandala design?

(4) WHAT NEXT: (In the process journal...)
