The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvon

Really small book and super easy to read. It is written from the perspective of a man who has moved from the West Indies to London in the 1950s. It is written in a West Indian accent called Creole and it is a really funny and enjoyable read.

I think people should be reading this book as the 1950s is a very interesting time. In the past many West Indians had worked as slaves on sugar plantations owned by the British. By 1950 these plantations had long gone however a lot of racism and hostility still remained. Britain began inviting West Indians over to start a new life in London. Despite being invited, when they arrived they were met with a lot of hostility and racism and many people didn't understand why they were there. The West Indian migrants represented the start of immigration into Britain and it is very interesting to compare the views of people in Britain then and now.

Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangerembga

This book is just brilliant! In the West we face a lot of gender roles and stereotypes. Although the majority of other countries also face these problems, the gender roles are not always the same. Historically some people have assumed that all men and women across the globe must face the same pressures and expectations that men and women in the West do - but that's not always the case. Assuming what other people think and experience can be offensive if it is wrong. 

This book is written from the perspective of a young girl in Africa and explores the struggles she faces as a young girl growing up in Africa trying to navigate the strict gender roles which are placed upon her. It is very moving and inspirational. It is also quite easy to read.
