Death could be hard for someone because they may have seen others die and do not want the same for them. Emily Dickinson states, "The Truth must dazzle gradually" which means accepting the truth slowly and it cannot be done overnight. The truth needs to be told with a joyful tone so that the person can feel better. Telling the truth to someone straightforwardly makes them constantly feel worried about it. Death is something that will always happen in the end, but people can take their time thinking about it and not have to worry if they are going to die.

The line that contains the simile is "As Lightning to the Children eased," which refers to how adults tend to calm children when lightning strikes, brushing it off and telling them not to worry about it. The simile is used to show that people do the same thing with the idea of death and how everyone is going to die one day. It touches on the fact that people need to stop worrying about when death will come, and start enjoying their lives.

The meaning of truth is that a person needs to accept death is always in the end. The narrator says, "Tell all the truth but tell it slant". The meaning of the word "slant" is that there should be a light-hearted way to talk about the coming of death. Doing this, it could help the person feel less worried and won't be constantly think about their death in the end. This symbol arises from the context of this poem.

In the poem, Dickinson states that, "Success in Circuit lies, Too bright for our infirm delight," meaning that people try to convince themselves that they are not afraid of death, and that death is too much of a topic for our fragile beings. However, it is known that death is inevitable and nothing can stop it. Dickinson states that gradually accepting death will make it easier for people or every man will face the hard truth too soon.
