"Left alone, after his father's accident, to carry the burden of farm and mill, he had had no time for convivial loiterings in the village; and when his mother fell ill the loneliness of the house grew more oppressive than that of the fields."

The setting - Starkfield, specifically the farm he lives on contributes to his character because the farm became a burden as he wasn't able to have any free time. This caused Ethan to become detached from the outside world and working was the only thing he was comfortable with doing. This is why he doesn't feel an attachment to his wife, as she was there since his mom got sick and that's when Ethan started concentrating on work.

-"Ned Hale and Ruth Varnum came just as near running into the big elm at the bottom. We were all sure they were killed."

This part of nature is vital to the importance of the setting, as well as how the characters (Specifically Ethan and Mattie) act and the way it affects their lives. In the beginning their destiny is hinted at with the elm tree and the near death of the other young couple. It is this part of nature (elm tree) that at first offers them a way to escape the town of Starkfield and their seemingly grim fates of being separated, but then it is what forces them to stay for the rest of their lives. Together but not in the way they wanted to be.
