Due to word study being the first thing in the morning after breakfast, it was hard to implement. Every chance she got she would blame her scores, instruction (or lack of), student growth on the Principal for placing her in math. Every time we met, I tried to reinforce that while not everyone would be masters of math, it was quite possible to become proficient. I suggested that the move may be a blessing in disguise. For one, she could possibly be provided support to assist her during the day. Secondly, she could help support students in the Pre-K program and get them ready for Kinder. Lastly, I mentioned how another teacher I knew moved her from Second grade to Pre-K and has loved it. This goes against the 5E model. This made me cringe however I had to be open as to the "why" and acknowledge that the teacher believed she was meeting the needs of the students I asked if she was comfortable with me introducing a new unit with a lab instead of vocabulary and that made her cringe. Once I modeled the "engage," she gained clarity. Opportunity: We took a chance on prioritizing the biggest barrier to student learning right at that given moment - student discourse & engagement. An opportunity I would often champion her with, was the power of her voice - using it to say "I'm overwhelmed", "I can't do that", or "I need help".
