Problem - Teacher states that she doesn't have time for word study, so she is not able to teach the skills.

We sat down together to review her schedule. Due to word study being the first thing in the morning after breakfast, it was hard to implement. We were able to rearrange some things and find ways to embed the skills throughout the framework that way students were able to get work with the skill even if they walked in late.

One teacher consistently reminded me that she was not a math teacher, and should have been assigned to RLA. Every chance she got she would blame her scores, instruction (or lack of), student growth on the Principal for placing her in math. Every time we met, I tried to reinforce that while not everyone would be masters of math, it was quite possible to become proficient. I never won her over.

A teacher was upset that her admin was going to move her down from Kinder to Pre-K (before the closures). I suggested that the move may be a blessing in disguise. For one, she could possibly be provided support to assist her during the day. Secondly, she could help support students in the Pre-K program and get them ready for Kinder. Lastly, I mentioned how another teacher I knew moved her from Second grade to Pre-K and has loved it. The teacher became more at ease.

I had a teacher that teaches Science vocabulary in isolation. This goes against the 5E model. This made me cringe however I had to be open as to the "why" and acknowledge that the teacher believed she was meeting the needs of the students I asked if she was comfortable with me introducing a new unit with a lab instead of vocabulary and that made her cringe. Once I modeled the "engage," she gained clarity. I accommodated her by writing the vocabulary on the board and constantly referencing the vocabulary throughout the lesson.

Problem: The teacher was feeling extremely overwhelmed by her students' underperformance, the multiple directives she was receiving (me, MCL, admin), & her own belief that she wasn't an effective teacher.

Opportunity: We took a chance on prioritizing the biggest barrier to student learning right at that given moment - student discourse & engagement. An opportunity I would often champion her with, was the power of her voice - using it to say "I'm overwhelmed", "I can't do that", or "I need help". This is something this teacher still needs support with - realizing that help is okay.

I love this opportunity because it instills in the students, and the teacher, that vocabulary is knowledge, and if we want students to be able to absorb and conceptualize skills, they need to be able to see and USE them in practice through authentic experiences, not in isolation. We want them to have lifelong skills, not memorize something for the sake of passing a test in the short-run.
