         <description><![CDATA[<div>Working class housing: dangerous, unsanitary, and overcrowded&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Size of the average family was much larger. Excess of eight kids<br><br></div><div>Low income families had more kids so they could send them out to earn a wage outside the home<br><br></div><div>Houses were smaller than they are today, so the families had to squeeze into homes in the inner city<br><br></div><div>The houses were inner city terraces or houses built in clustered rows alongside factories<br><br></div><div>Houses were normally owned by landlords<br><br></div><div>Houses occupied by the working class were in Melbourne were in the suburbs of Collingwood, Richmond, Port Melbourne and Footscray. In Sydney, they were in Surry Hills and Pyrmont which are now considered to be relatively exclusive areas.<br><br></div><div>Poorly built from cheap materials, sometimes proving to be hazardous<br><br></div><div>No sewerage or water supply<br><br></div><div>Flushing toilets and even baths were rarities inside.<br><br></div><div>Their toilets were cans outside mostly in small sheds.<br><br></div><div>As waste was unable to be flushed away, disease was able to quickly spread.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>houses were usually poorly built and made from cheap materials in some cases were hazardous to occupants.Most of early buildings were single story buildings due to the shortage of good mortar. Not surprisingly, early mud and clay brick houses rapidly deteriorated. Loam was also used for plastering.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Most materials were sourced from local suppliers which is why there is often minor differences between the houses. The back of most houses had some sort of glass conservatory to allow the keen gardener to grow his “cuttings” for the garden. Electricity was generally not available until around 1930, so most houses prior to that date would have relied upon gas lighting.</div>]]></description>
