Page 26
"You take up for your buddies, no matter what they do. When you're a gang, you stick up for the members. If you don't stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers, it isn't a gang anymore."
This explains that no matter what happens, the gang will always have each other's back, which is an example for the theme friendship.

Page 57
Johnny explains why he stabbed Bob, "I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you."
This quote is an example that relates to the theme friendship because it explains why Johnny stabbed Bob, and it was for Ponyboy, to save him.

Page 76
"but one night i saw Dally gettin' picked up by the fuzz, and he kept real cool and calm the whole time. They was gettin' him for breakin' out the windows in the school building, and it was Two-Bit who did that. And Dally knew it. But he just took the sentence without battin' an eye or even denyin' it. That's gallant."
This shows that although Dally is tough and doesn't really show his caring or soft side, he will always be there for the gang and make sure they don't get in trouble, so instead he takes the blame.

In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the author develops theme through the setting, characters and plot over the course of the text by showing how the gang has encountered problems and conflicts together. Also, by telling how the characters interact with each other. An example would be when Dally saves Ponyboy from the fire and also Johnny. No matter what the situation is, the gang will always have each other's back, which explains the theme Friendship.
