From 17th-century domestic interiors to early modernist self-portraits, we see women portrayed as symbols of virtue, beauty, labor, and eventually, agents of their own stories. Some paintings raise quiet questions. In Judith Leyster’s The Proposition, a woman just trying to sew in peace is interrupted by a man’s unwanted offer, a scene that feels uncomfortably familiar. Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, painting centuries later, offer glimpses of women’s lives that feel more personal: moments of thought, care, friendship, and strength, often painted from direct experience. Cassatt’s women reading or relaxing with friends suggest a deep inner world, something not often granted to women in earlier art. A key pairing compares Caravaggio’s and Artemisia Gentileschi’s versions of Judith Slaying Holofernes. Caravaggio’s Judith seems unsure, while Gentileschi’s moves with calm determination. That shift in perspective, what it means to see a woman not just painted, but represented with agency. These works also ask us to think about art made in and about the domestic world. Sewing, reading, caregiving, once considered decorative or minor, are seen here with new weight. These everyday gestures and materials are anything but secondary.
