The death penalty should be abolished. The article “The Death Penalty Should Be Abolished” is about how a death penalty is unjustly and is a violation of human rights. The article talks about how it is a violation of human rights. The article also talks about how a death penalty could be used, for example in the article it states, “In country after country, it is used disproportionately against the poor or against racial or ethnic minorities. It is also used as a tool of political repression.” (1). The article is targeting the judicial system because the author disagrees with the death penalty because it is taking a person’s life away, it is a punishment that can not be undone. The article goes over the rhetorical appeal, pathos. It goes over pathos because in this text it states, “Everyone should be aware of what the death penalty is, how it is used, how it affects them, how it violates fundamental rights.” (1). This is effective because of how the author is trying to make the reader feel empathy. This source helps define the topic by telling you the different ways of how a death penalty is bad for society. Although the source has valid points, it also has bias because the author of this source is Criminal Justice. This is relevant to my research topic because it shows al of the flaws of the death penalty.

In the second article “The Death Penalty Should Be Abolished” by Vicki Quade, the purpose of this article is to raise awareness on the fact that a death penalty is too extreme of a punishment. It talks about how we can change people’s opinion on the death penalty and convince the government how cruel it is.  The intended audience is the government, the author is trying to convince them to abolish the death penalty. The source uses the rhetorical appeal, logos, they give us dates and times in the source. It was effective because, it used dates and logistics in the article. The source helps define the topic by stating how the death penalty is too harsh for criminals and talks about how we don’t have a right to take a life. There is some bias in this article due to the author interviewing an anti-death penalty member. The usefulness this source shows to the research topic is that it gives us alternatives, which is long-term imprisonment.

The purpose of this source is to inform the readers about the racial disparities that goes on that influences the sentencing of the death penalty. The article talks about the evidence of the flawed system and how the system makes a lot of mistakes. The intended audience are the readers, and they discuss how the judicial system is flawed. The rhetorical appeal used in this source was a mixture of logos and ethos due to the constant facts, dates, and statistics. This source helps clarify the topic due to the article showing evidence of the flawed system. There is bias in this article since it was from Criminal Justice. The relevance it brings to my topic is exposing the dysfunction in the decision making of the system.

In the article, "The Death Penalty Is Unjust." The theme of this source is the danger of wrongful convictions. The article is about how a death penalty is irrevocable and can not be undone, as well as how the rate of wrongful convictions for people who must serve a death penalty “provides no reassurance that innocent people are not being executed.” (2). The intended audience are the readers and my question to them is, why is the judicial system still allowing death sentences? The rhetorical appeal in this article would be logos since it gives dates such as “1993” when a convicted killer named David Long attempted suicide before he was to be executed. This source helps define the argument by telling the reader how a death penalty can affect a person permanently. There is bias in the article due to it being from the death penalty. The relevance this brings to my topic is that it shows how impactful a death penalty could be a for a person.
