In the novel “Passing” by Nella Larsen jealousy takes place through interactions between the main characters prompting an unsettling tone. Irene is invited to have tea at Clare’s house, although she does not wish to attend. Her fascination with Clare is complex. Irene dislikes the fact that Clare is careless and unpredictable, however she still finds her attitude interesting.
