What caused European migration into the US in the 1800's?

Between 1820-70, over seven and half million immigrants came into the US, more than the entire population of the the US in 1810. 90% of these immigrants came from primarily Ireland, England and Germany, and were largely doing so to find religious and political freedom and greater economic and job opportunities. Between 1845-50, there was in influx of Irish into America due to the potato famine, and in 1848, there was a similar increase in German immigration because of the 1848 Revolution that caused political turmoil within Germany.

The Know-Nothings set up a predecessor to how immigrants and minorities are treated today by supremacists. Anti- Irish, anti-German, and anti-Catholic groups were prevalent in that time because the change the immigrants brought made them feel uncomfortable. Racial supremacy groups still exist today in the USA, such as the National Socialist movement, but now they target primarily African Americans and Muslims in American society while trying to keep Caucasians as the superior race.

There was an undeniable cultural change in metropolitan areas, bleeding into the culinary, recreational and industrial aspects of city life. Stores with German signs began popping up, and foods like sausages, hamburgers and sauerkraut became more normalized. Irish found solace within the Catholic community and soon dominated the institution, along with Italians. Native New-Yorkers felt like foreign culture was taking over their city, and neighborhoods were becoming either German, Irish and Italian. Native Born grew competitive toward these groups, and felt they were losing their culture and work to such groups.

Many supporters of the Know-Nothing Party formed gangs such as the Dead Rabbits, the Blackbirds, and B'hoy, in hope to drive the Irish and German Immigrants out. These gangs usually clashed with Nativist political groups, who found their actions as a criminal and threatening subculture.
