I take ongoing courage and inspiration from Alfie Kohn's fantastic and well researched book, "No Contest: The Case Against Competition." I recommend it to every teen, parent, adult, and educator. We live in such a dangerously competetive society, where millions are hurt on the daily, from youngest to oldest by unnecessary, ugly, and damning competition and false narratives of what is best and limiting ideas of scarcity.

There is a Rufus Jones quote I find inspiring: "Most persons are set on fire by someone who is already aflame." When I am feeling useless, ineffective, depleted, I try to remind myself that my worth is not measured in my actions, but in the effects of my actions. I may not individually change the world in a grandiose way, but the passion and love and excitement and joy that I can bring to my students' (and maybe some adults') learning has the potential to affect them in ways that will ripple passion and love and excitement and joy and change into the world. Pretty neat when you think about it. <3

I often think of this little poem when times are tough - a reminder that my heart is big enough to hold multiple weather systems, that I can feel joy and sorrow at the same time.

This book was given to me in my 20's by a friend before I went traveling for a year after graduating from college. I give it to every high school and college graduate I know as a gift. It has continued to inspire me at different stages of my life, usually when I am making an important transition in my life that takes courage and faith. When I lived aboard, it was the first time that I had ever traveled that far away from my family. It was the first time I had ever lived on my own, found a job, paid my rent, found a place to live, etc. This book was with me reminding me that "When you want something, the world conspires to make it happen." It helped me to stay strong and believe in myself, even when things felt hard or impossible. I made my way and had life-changing and inspiring experiences living on my own in foreign countries. And I not only survived but thrived. I showed myself that I could do it even when I was desperate to find a job or a place to live.

We talk a good deal about resilience and grit in education. And we are usually talking about our students. But as teachers, we need to cultivate this as well. The past few years for educators have been some of the most challenging and trying. Many of us left and never returned. Many of us got or are burned out. Some of us are still trying to heal. This book reminds me that I am capable. It also reminds me that there is still hope, magic, and possibility in the world, even though it can feel so very hard sometimes. I try to bring this into my teaching and coaching of children and adults. With the hope that it inspires them to see their greatness and possibilities.

-Keisha
