The monarch is not elected it is inherited, which means if the Queen or King passes away or steps down as the monarch the descendant becomes the next monarch. Next leader of the UK is the prime minister, they aren't elected right away there is actual process  to becoming a prime minister. To become prime minister you must be a member in 1 of the 2 houses of Parliament. And you can be elected by the people who want to represent you as a Member of Parliament. A monarchy is form of government where there is a head of state who controls the country/state. Democracy on the other hand is a form of government which is elected by the eligible voters. There are few similarities between an absolute monarchy and a democracy. The Constitutional Monarchy has a Parliament, a ruling body of officials who keep in 'check' of the king and queen  and guide them to make the best choices for the people of the United Kingdom.
