Mary MacKillop was born in 1842, Fitzroy, Melbourne, to Scottish parents Flora MacDonald and Alexander MacKillop. Mary was the eldest of eight children. The MacKillop family became impoverished after a financially flourishing start. Alexander MacKillop studied for the Priesthood of Rome, spending six years in study before returning to Scotland. Mary was mainly educated by her father, but also attended private schools. Alexander MacKillop lacked unfortunate financial awareness, often leaving the family without a home.

To support her impoverished family, Mary earned her living by working as a governess, teacher at the Portland School, and clerk.
While working as a governess, Mary met Father Julian Tension Woods who needed assistance with education for children in the outback. She was greatly inspired by him in 1866. Mary was the founder of the first St Joseph School in Penola.

The congregation of Sisters of St Joseph began when women joined Mary. She was then asked by Bishop Sheil in 1867 to open a school in Adelaide. The sisters moved around in small groups to areas around New Zealand and Australia. Then Brazil, Peru and refugee camps in Thailand and Uganda.

Extract of Mary's writing to Bishop Sheil - 1871

My Lord,

Will you kindly permit me to write a few thoughts which it troubles me to keep from you, and yet which I can hardly express when talking to you.

I would speak them, my Lord, and I am sure you would wish me to be unreserved with you, but I seem to lose courage; in trying to be unreserved I would displease my Bishop.

It is in a most docile and humble spirit, my Lord, that I can venture to say what are and have been for many years the thoughts of my heart. I longed for a Religious life, one in which I could serve God and His poor neglected little ones, in poverty and disregard of the world and its fleeting opinions.

When an opportunity of entering another religious Community was offered to me, family circumstances, for one reason, prevented my availing myself of it, but there was another reason as well, known only to my Confessor, namely, that in the Order I could not find what my heart craved. I looked for a poverty more like unto that practised in the early Religious Orders of the Church, a poverty which in its practice would make a kind of reparation to God for the little confidence now placed in His Divine Providence by so many of His creatures. Circumstances, as well as choice, having for many years compelled me to live as a teacher, I saw so much of the evils attending a merely secular course of education, that all my desires seemed to centre in a wish to devote myself to poor children and the afflicted poor, in some very poor Order.

My Confessor at one time thought I would have to go to France ere I could meet with what I desired. But after a few years I went to open a school in Penola, under Father Woods, who gradually unfolded to me his idea of endeavouring to do something in the same way for the neglected poor children of South Australia. The way in which he described their wants so completely agreed with all my previous desires, that when he asked me whether (provided he got the Bishop's consent to commence an Institute to meet these wants) I would remain and become one of his first children in the flock, I joyfully consented.

This writing is from Mary MacKillop to Bishop Sheil in 1871. Mary was greatly inspired by Father Julian Tension Woods to assist in providing education to poor children in the outback. Mary was stopped because of family circumstances and by not knowing how she wanted to carry out her religious life. This writing shows the exchange between Mary and Bishop Sheil. Mary was inspired. This writing from Mary to Bishop Sheil impacted Mary's religious endeavours. From this writing, Mary was challenged to find what her heart craved.

Mary met Father Julian Tension Woods who had a parish and needed help with education for children in the outback. At the time of meeting Father Julian, Mary's family was dependent on her income so she was not able to follow her dream. After being greatly influenced by Father Julian Tension Woods in 1866, Mary MacKillop and Julian Tension Woods co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph's. The Sisters of St Joseph's were dedicated to the Catholic Education of the poor and to other social problems.

Matthew 22: 34-40
The Greatest Commandment

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

WORLD OF THE TEXT
Jesus was asked “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”. He replied with “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." That was the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
The conversation between the lawyer and Jesus took place during the last week before the crucifixion. The expert in law was testing Jesus. The Pharisees were assembling themselves against Jesus. Jesus responded to the expert or law by presenting two commandments. The commandments were related to his relationship with God.

WORLD BEHIND THE TEXT
At the time of this parable, it was the last week before the crucifixion of Jesus. During this time, the Pharisees and various groups of enemies assembled against Jesus. Pharisees and enemies presented their challenges to Jesus. With background information given about this time era, it provides a deeper meaning about this parable.

WORLD IN FRONT OF THE TEXT
This parable provides many meanings for our lives today. From this parable, we are taught to love one another, as you love yourself. The expert in Law (Pharisee) challenged Jesus, as he was against his teachings. This parable applies to all humans today. Everybody needs to love each other and share their kindness with others.

Mary MacKillop was greatly involved with the poor, providing many with education. I think that Mary MacKillop would have been inspired by this text, as she followed in the footsteps of the Lord and she gave to those who were not as fortunate. Mary loved the Lord with all her heart and all her soul. She loved her neighbours as she loved herself, by giving to others and dedicating herself to the work of God. Mary is now seen as a woman of courage and great dedication to the poor.

This parable reflects Mary's work, as she loved her neighbours as herself. She was dedicated to helping others by providing education and giving to the poor. This parable is a reflection of Mary's work. This parable could have been an inspiration for Mary, inspiring her to love all.

The Rerum Novarum is the encyclical written by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. Section 4 of the Rerum Novarum 'Protection for the Poor' states

"The richer class have many ways of shielding themselves, and stand less in need of help from the State; whereas the mass of the poor have no resources of their own to fall back upon, and must chiefly depend upon the assistance of the State.
And it is for this reason that wage-earners, since they mostly belong in the mass of the needy, should be specially cared for and protected by the government."

This section of the Rerum Novarum talks about the need for the government to help and care for those who are not as fortunate. Mary MacKillop would have welcomed this as she was greatly involved with those who were in poverty, and did not have access to resources of their own. This part of the encyclical would have inspired Mary, as she was greatly dedicated to helping and giving to the less fortunate. She would have been inspired to further her work.

Throughout Mary's work, she made many sacrifices. During childhood, Mary's family greatly depended on the income Mary brought in. Family circumstances prevented Mary from carrying out her religious work. Mary was also stopped from her work, as she did not know what her heart desired. Mary made sacrifices as she followed what she thought was right for her, not knowing what the outcome would be.

Prophetic Role
Mary's work was centred around the injustice of people.
