Title:The Lives They Live: Tiong Bahru Market's 'chicken boy'
Link: http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/tiong-bahru-markets-chicken-boy
Summary: Mr Chan sell 'bak kwa' when he was 12 but his dad did not like him to do the job as grilling the bak kwa will spoil his eyes as the smoke will enter his eyes. Not only that, Mr Chan will have to work very hard till 12 am on eve of Chinese New Year. The salary was only $10 per month. He then switched from grilling bak kwa to selling chicken. This was the job that got him to marry his wife when he was 26 then and his wife,19. His wife were selling vegetables at that point of time but he had no idea how they got in love. Now, he have 7 daughters and 2 sons and together with them is 16 grandchildren. They will often help Mr Chan and his wife, their shop closes every Monday and Wednesday. Now, he sells chicken rice. Though he enjoy his work, he had some downfalls and the worst was 2005 due to the bird flu breakout but he managed to pull it through afterwards.
Vocabulary:
-demolished;pull or knock down (a building)
-halved;divide into two parts of equal or roughly equal size
-shun;persistently avoid, ignore, or reject (someone or something) through antipathy or caution

-innards;entrails which means a person's or animal's intestines or internal organs, especially when removed or exposed.
Opinion:
1) When the elderly aged, they will usually slack at the coffee shop drinking and also talk to their friends to catch up on daily news. But, there are still handful of them that still prefers to work as they are used to working when they were younger. To me, its fine as long as they are healthy and doing something productive. I think rather see them working then staying at home, sick. This is because they are so used to working and then there was a sudden stop to them to retire and they are bored doing nothing. By working, their minds are still working as though as they are exercising because if they are at home, their minds will be stagnant.
2) no.
3) I am 16 but i think when i grow older, i will get used to the job that I am working for and willing to work more. I want to be able to talk to people and interacting with them rather than staying at home. Only if i am sick then it leaves me with no choice. I want to be independent the case whereby in the future my children do not want to take care of me, i will have my own pocket money and able to live alone. Honestly, let aside money, i work so that i can spend my time with doing something productive.
