People, in my opinion, are the representatives of a country. People in different countries have different practices which allows for a greater diversity of culture in the world. One's cultural upbringing can show how much one has changed from then to now, because culture is passed down from generation to generation. Take Japan for an example, when we go to a Japanese restaurant, we may find customers slurping the noodles and making a lot of noise while eating. In Japan, that is a sign of the food being delicious and they are complementing the chef in a way. However, if we were to slurp a bowl of noodles at a restaurant in Singapore, everyone would judge us and see us as ill-mannered people. Why? This is because it is an aspect of Japanese culture. When we bring a tradition of a different country to another, there may be some misunderstanding between people. This is why culture is such an important thing to learn, It is something that is unique to a specific country. So, when we do go to a country again, we could learn what we should do, and what we should not.

The practices of different countries can vary a lot. For example, in Thailand it is rude to touch or rub someone’s head, as it is believed to be a sacred body part. In India, the right hand is used to for “clean things” such as eating, receiving a gift just to name a few while the left hand is used for “dirty things” such as wiping one’s self after using the toilet. Customs may differ around the world so it is important to do some research about them before visiting a country to avoid offending the locals.

Lastly, when visiting a country, I would most certainly learn to appreciate my life. As the world is becoming modernised, our lives are gradually improving. It is, nowadays, hard to witness people who are starving for food and people who lack proper housing, which was very common in the past. Due to this, many, including me, do not appreciate our lives and instead, take them for granted. By visiting the people in underdeveloped countries such as Africa, Cambodia or slums such as the ones in India, I would better understand how some people worldwide suffer without proper housing, education and healthcare. Most people, including me, would then know that we are not supposed to take our lives for granted and instead, appreciate it.

Well, many people travel to visit places all over the world with a dark history. Places like death sites and concentration camps are widely popular amongst tourists. One example is Germany. Another example of dark tourism is the ‘Thai-Burma Death Railway’, where many go to pay their respects to the thousands of lives that were lost.

As mentioned, I also can learn about a country’s culture when I visit it. My family and I travelled to Australia to experience Hillsong church service in Sydney. We went to the church and attended its morning gathering. The loud blasting of music and flashing lights taught me the culture of Australia’s churches. People travel to Cambodia to visit ‘Angkor Wat’. It is a Hindu temple which is famous for its 49-meter long battle scene, where people can learn more about Hinduism. People also travel to Jerusalem which is known for its holy sites. Specifically, there is the ‘Western wall’ which is also known as ‘Wailing Wall’. When I visited the place, I learnt that the western wall is open to everyone, not just the believers. There, people write their prayers and hopes and stuff them into the cracks on the wall. Did you know that you could use any sort of paper? One can use paper from notebook to even bubblegum wrappers. Papers that fall from the cracks are swept up and left at the Mount of Olives. We can learn so much about diverse cultures and religions just by booking a plane ticket.

Secondly, different countries have good qualities and habits that we can pick up from them. For example, Japan is known for their clean environment where dustbins are hard to find as people are encouraged to carry their own litter and sort them out afterwards to recycle. Being one of the cleanest countries in the world, their toilets and roads are clean, everywhere we look, is almost litter-free. Why is this the case for Japan and not for Singapore? People in Japan adopt the habit of piling up their litter until the rubbish is full, then sort out the litter according to the materials that they are made from. They adopted the habit of recycling as the Government does not place rubbish bins everywhere and the rubbish is only collected on a certain day. People would not want their area to be pilled up with litter and the pungent smell and therefore minimising the amount of times they have to use something that they have to dispose like tissue papers, metal cans and plastic. This inspires us to do the same as we be mindful about our actions of littering and carry out the initiative of recycling, playing a part in keeping our environment clean.

One of the biggest thing about a country by visiting it is its culture, and its people. People in different countries have different practices which allows for a greater diversity of culture in the world and more importantly, more things that we can learn about the rest of the world through travelling. Why? This is because it is an aspect of Japanese culture which will only be prevalent in Japan but might be seen as foreign in other countries. When we bring a tradition of a different country to another, there may be some misunderstanding between people. This is why culture is such an important thing to learn, It is something that is unique to a specific country. There are so many different traditions, taboos and practices adopted by different countries that we should learn to be aware about. At the end of the day a countries culture and its people are more than just words on a book, its not something you can simply learn from reading online or watching a video. It is something you have to experience yourself to fully understand and learn about.

Well, many people may travel to visit places all over the world with a dark history to find out more about what had happened in the past. Places like death sites and concentration camps are widely popular amongst tourists. Tourists get to learn and have a better feel of what the place was like as they travel and learn about the history that occurred at that place. This may enlighten people which may further interest them into learning about the rich and interesting history by visiting the countries. One example is Germany. I visited the ‘Berlin Holocaust Memorial’ where I learnt how 6 million Jews were persecuted and saw how gruesome their deaths were. This not only let me realize how inhumane people can be but also had allowed me to feel empathetic towards the Jews that were ill-treated by the Germans. Besides that, it also taught me that we should prevent doing such cruel acts to other people.Another example of dark tourism would be the ‘Thai-Burma Death Railway’, where many go to pay their respects to the thousands of lives that were lost.

One thing you can learn from travelling is the difference in practices and cultures in different countries, and how they vary with one another. You go there to experience it so that you will not offend other people which, is better than reading it up as you gain deeper insight of the cultures and the reasoning behind it. This lets us be more respectful, and also understand how to be more accommodating and compromising.
An example of this can be seen in the different meanings of gestures in different countries. In Thailand, it is rude to touch or rub someone’s head, as it is believed to be a sacred body part, whereas in India, the right hand is used to for “clean things” such as eating, receiving a gift just to name a few while the left hand is used for “dirty things” such as wiping one’s self after using the toilet. If you did not visit these places and just simply read about it online, will it be that meaningful and enriching?By visiting the place itself we will have a more open-minded view on different countries unique cultures, enabling us to deeply respect the culture without having a reason to doubt it.

Secondly, different countries have good qualities and habits that we can pick up from. I would be able to learn why and how certain countries value cleanliness as an important factor. For instance, Japan is well known for their clean environment where dustbins are hard to find and people are encouraged to carry their own litter, then sort them out afterwards to recycle. Being one of the cleanest countries in the world, their toilets and roads are clean and everywhere we look, the place is almost litter-free. People in Japan have adopted the habit of piling up their litter until the rubbish is full, then sorting them out according to the materials that they are made from. They have adopted the habit of recycling as the Government does not place rubbish bins everywhere and the rubbish is only collected on a certain day. People would not want their area to be pilled up with litter due to the pungent smell it produces, which therefore minimises the amount of times they have to use disposables like tissue papers, metal cans and plastic. By visiting countries as such, I would better understand and learn why and how certain countries value cleanliness, and be mindful about my actions.
