Such were the computers that I first came across as a student ; to today's youth something from a bygone era and pre-modern. But since then technology has shrunk and with it the concepts of time and space as we communicate instantly and unconstrained by distance through ubiquitous minuscule items that we carry with us at all times.

Bloomsday is an annual commemoration and celebration of the life of Irish writer James Joyce during which the events of his novel Ulysses (which is set on 16 June 1904) are relived. It is observed on 16 June in Dublin and elsewhere.

Ulysses is considered to be one of the most important works of modernist literature. Bloomsday involves a range of cultural activities including Ulysses readings and dramatisations, pub crawls and other events. Some dress in Edwardian costume and retrace Bloom's route around Dublin. Devotees have even been known to hold marathon readings of the entire novel, some lasting up to 36 hours.

And that, is why the wheels are coming off U.S. foreign policy. It’s not George W. Bush’s fault or Barack Obama’s fault; it’s not anyone in particular’s fault. This dish evidences the fluidity of our constructions of culture and our movement away from rigid traditionalism -- utilising American ketchup and Indian curry alongside German pork sausage, this dish attests to modernity in German cuisine.

My daughter, who is eight, taught herself to program on the commandline, because the user interface wasn't moving fast enough for her and she "wanted to work with the computer directly." I think of computers as new, and user interfaces as a lovely move forward, but digital natives are moving so much faster, that they are questioning what we built. If "finding America" made the people of those times reconsider Classical philosophy, what then when we are considering bigger leaps in only a generation?

Or better - this would have been. Because it has never been built. This image is not a photo, it's a computer project. I think this is a perfect example on how pre-, actual and post-modern are intertwined: a never finished project about prehistory that was regarded by the inhabitants as a symbol of modernity and future for their city, which, though never built, feels somehow real (you thought it was photo, didn't you?) and has somehow its presence in the minds of the inhabitants. The holographic that becomes real: this is (post)modern.

I work at an art museum, and the ryman gallery displays some of the most inflammatory artwork in the museum. It questions the need (or previously untouchable construction) for art to have visual interest besides texture, presence, or dimension in order to be considered art. The traditional view, that art should be representational, was already deconstructed/broken in the abstract, cubist, and surrealist artwork of the modern era. Ryman's paintings continue a long modernist tradition of questioning the authority of long-established views.

Modernity is everywhere around us!

In my head, the term "modernity" is inevitably connected with ART. We express our feelings through it – and through feelings we perceive our world. That is why I love modern art – because it shows the contemporary world as it is seen by someone who wanted to find something... more.

During my travels, I always have my copy of Ulysses by James Joyce in my handbag. It is already rumpled and well-worn, its pages sprinkled by seawater as well as dusty because of desert sand, but I don't mind. Every chapter reminds me the some moment when I was reading it on the beach in Thessaloniki or in the train in Antwerpen. And while the plot of the book takes place within a single day, I tantalize my reading of it through months, even years. The style of writing of this book was Joyce's way to express modernity, the style of reading it is mine.

Another example is the photography attached. The day when I took it was one of the best days in my life – it was my 25th birthday. I had just left S. M. A. K. (the museum of contemporary art in Gent, Belgium) and then I was taking a walk through a park nearby, when I found this inscription on the wall. I was looking at it the same way as at artworks in museum just a few minutes before. It felt the same.

Modern art is everywhere around us. Sometimes, we create it even unconsciously because since modernity is the hardly seizable term, we express our feelings about it even through our everyday activities – we just don't have time to think about it anymore.

This picture was from a public lecture regarding the Reformation and it's impact not only on politics and religion but also emotional expression. For me, this is clearly not modern Europe as we not only have a cruel and inhumane punishment, burning alive, but we also have a child being present as well, something we would never consider doing today. Lastly, the reason these people are being burnt alive, holding different religions views, is seen as a gross violation of human rights and freedoms.
Renovation of the Gutenberg Museum

I upload this computer visualisation of the so called Bibel Tower which was an idea to modernise the Gutenberg Museum in my home town Mainz, Germany. Once the city council came up with this idea to renew the aged Gutenberg Museum, heavy discussions in the population arose. The plan was so controversial since it would have changed the outlook of the museum tremendously next to the fact that the tower would have had a high cost. Eventually the city council decided to conduct its first-ever referendum about the plan. The referendum failed and the Gutenberg Museum stays the way it is. In my opinion it is kind of ironic that Johannes Gutenberg with the invention of the press opened up Modernity but the modernisation of a museum dedicated to his invention was rejected by the population of his home town.

The remains of the old university church were integrated in the building. This church had been blown up by the leadership of the GDR in 1968. This modern architecture of the university would thus like to preserve the destruction and at the same time integrate it into a new beginning
