The relations between the EU and the UK have always been complicated. Some countries like France didn't want the UK to join the Union, mostly because of the British's relation with the US and its economy, who wasn't seen as compatible, according to Charles de Gaulle. Even when the UK joined the EU in 1973, everything wasn't clear yet. Clément Dulieu

But before choosing the date, he negotiated differents terms with the other EU states. Finally after more or less successful negotiations he chose the date of 23 June 2016 for his referendum.

I will start by adding 2/3 elements concerning what Clement have said. Indeed, relations between the EU and the United Kingdom have always been complicated. The UK’s decision to leave the European Union after 40 years of loyalty was an important source of debate in Parliament. Indeed, the Common Market (another name given to the European Economic Community) has not always been united as one might think. The former president of France, Charles de Gaulle is said to have opposed the various proposals of the United Kingdom in 1963 as well as in 1967. In addition, a financial contribution from the United Kingdom to the European budget has been established. This agreement was exclusive to the United Kingdom and it is still exclusive today. However, it has been learned that does not have to participate in certain European policies. For example, the UK did not join Schengen area in 1985. The country had decided to maintain a border with different controls like as the passport. The United Kingdom also chose to leave monetary union in 1992 to keep its currency and not move to the euro.
DOURDIN Léane T2

The Brexit isn't the first referundum in UK. In fact it's the second one. UK joining EU dated on 1973. After several years of debate and a new french president a new country are in this group. But two years after that, opinions differ and the first referundum took place. The majority was in favor but what acting today wasn't such a big surprise. Already at the start people had differing opinions, and it's today's case. Everyone heard about this decision and all what can happened next. SEBILE Maddy T2

The 10 years since the integration of 10 new countries into the EU in 2004 have raised many questions in the UK. The increase in the number of migrants, especially after the financial crisis of 2008, has created resetment towards its migrants. Political parties have been slow to recognize this and act accordingly. This is why support for the anti-European party and its leader Nigel Farage intensified in 2014. Indeed, a survey revealed that the party had the support of over 16% of the electorate. Amandine PIERREJEAN T1

After 40 years of memebership with the European Union, the UK is the first country ever to leave the European Union. At first, Charles de Gaulle didn't believe in its political system and was sceptical about its special relationship with the US, thus refusing its inclusion in the European Union in 1963 and 1967. They finally entered the EU in 1969 but several complications followed, which have estranged them little by little from the EU, especially when in 1984, the prime minister Margareth Tatcher negotiated to reduce financal contribution to the European budget or when they arranged not to
participate in some of the European policies. They also had the privilege to keep their currency money and not change it into Euros, despite the fact that this was a global arrangement for all European countries.

The brexit was predictable, starting with the first referendum. Opinions were already mixed about the entry of the United Kingdom in the EU. Most of them were in favor of its entry, but some were not. Then the currency did not change to the Euro, the universal currency of the EU countries. There were also differences of opinion in the EU about the entry of the United Kingdom, France for example was against, and today it is the entry of 10 new countries in the EU that has caused the biggest difference of opinion, because of the problem of immigration. So the responses in favor of leaving the EU in the second referendum were predictable.
Enola Larivé

Throughout history the United Kingdom has always negotiated the terms of its membership with the European Union. For example, in 1984 Margaret Thatcher negotiated an agreement to reduce her country's contribution to the European budget by several billions. In addition, the United Kingdom is exempt from participating in certain European policies: they are not part of the Schengen area. Indeed, they didn't adopt the euro in 1992, they kept the pound sterling. Furthermore, these differents "negotiations" or rather discord could prevent a possible "Brexit" from the United Kingdom, which was not often in accordance with the decisions of the European Union.
