John Adams signed the Alien and Sedition Acts that allowed the government to have the power to send immigrants back to their home country. The Act increased the years required to be a citizen from 5 to 14, restricted speech that insulted the government and allowed the imprisonment of immigrants who were considered dangerous. The goal of the Acts was to weaken the Democratic-Republican party, but it backfired and instead caused the Federalist party to lose the 1800 elections.
